Bundesliga preview – Hamburger SV vs Werder Bremen prediction.

Hamburg goalkeeper Rene Adler was sent off at Dortmund at the weekend and will be replaced by Jaroslav Drobny while he serves a one-match suspension. Midfielders Nicolai Muller and Albin Ekdal picked up injuries during the 3-0 defeat and are likely absentees on Friday while striker Pierre-Michel Lasogga is also struggling to be fit after his first-half substitution with a knee problem. Gideon Jung is back in training after complaining of a back problem and could be called into first team action for the first time in six weeks.

Viktor Skripnik could keep the same starting lineup that gave Werder Bremen their first win in five games on Saturday. It would mean veteran striker Claudio Pizarro starting ahead of Anthony Ujah and central defender Papy Djilobodji having to bide his time before reclaiming his place after returning from suspension. Midfielder Philipp Bargfrede is yet to return to training following a knee injury in January and centre-forward  Aron Johannsson is out for the season with a hip injury.

Possible Line-ups

Hamburger SV 4-2-3-1 formation: Drobny; Sakai, Reis, Spahic, Ostrzolek; Jung, Kacar; Gregoritsch, Holtby, Ilicevic; Schipplock

Werder Bremen 4-2-3-1 formation: Wiedwald; Gebre Selassie, Galvez, Vestergaard, Garcia; Fritz, Grillitsch; Yatabare, Junuzovic, Bartels; Pizarro

  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Werder Bremen have scored an average of 1.8 goals and conceded an average of 2 goals per game
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 6 of Hamburger SV’s previous 10 matches
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 7 of Werder Bremen’s previous 10 matches

Prediction

Hamburg go into Friday’s match having lost back-to-back games at Dortmund on Sunday following a home defeat against Darmstadt a week earlier. They have now lost four of the last five league games and are just three points above Werder Bremen who are four places below in 16th. Hamburg’s home form makes for uninspiring reading from the beginning of December since when Bruno Labbadia’s side has only won two and drawn two of nine Bundesliga games at Volksparkstadion. Werder Bremen’s hopes of survival took a turn for the better when defeating Wolfsburg 3-2 on Saturday. They had previously lost three and drawn one, although two of those defeats were away at Bayern Munich and at Dortmund. Skrepnik’s men led 2-1 going into the last 15 minutes before conceding twice against Dortmund and defeated third-placed Leverkusen 4-1 in BayArena last month. Werder Bremen can be dangerous away from home having won 5 out of 15 and could come out on top against an injury-hit Hamburg eleven.
