Ascot field two Group 3 contests on Wednesday afternoon, the first being the Longines Sagaro Stakes at 3.20 where the ground is likely to prove crucial. The more give in conditions the better for Peter Niven’s popular Clever Cookie while main market rivals Flying Officer and last year’s winner Mizzou would benefit from the ground riding faster so from a betting perspective it is the following six-furlong Pavillion Stakes at 3.55 which appeals more.

The Aidan O’Brien-trained Washington Dc is sure to prove popular following a winning seasonal reappearance at Dundalk earlier this month but despite having to concede 3lb to the field the Hugo Palmer inmate Gifted Master is taken to claim his fifth consecutive victory in the hands of Pat Smullen.

Although the son of Kodiac managed to make all in Newmarket’s Group 3 Autumn Stakes last October the impression left was that distances short of that mile would see the horse at his very best so conditions at the Berkshire venue are likely to prove ideal for this front-running gelding.

Interestingly, O’Brien runners have finished second to Gifted Master in his last three starts, a position the stable’s Washington Dc may have to settle for on this occasion. Of the rest Frankie Dettori’s mount Dhahmaan is likely to cause the two principles most problems.
