Leading Epsom Derby candidate Us Army Ranger puts his Classic credentials on the line in the Chester Vase at 3.10pm on Thursday afternoon and the Aidan O’Brien-trained colt is sure to go off at prohibitive odds for the extended 1m 4f contest. For a better value bet, however, it may be worth waiting until the final race on the card at 5.25pm which can go to Dance Of Fire from the Andrew Balding stable.

The mount of David Probert likes nothing better than to bowl along up front and from stall three there is every chance the gelding could get an easy lead and if in the same kind of form as when winning a Chelmsford handicap off a 3lb lower mark back in February should take plenty of beating.

The son of Norse Dancer didn’t get the best of runs when fifth at Kempton last time and while there were only seven runners that was a pretty hot contest, advertised by the horse who finished one place further back in sixth, Russian Realm, winner of a competitive handicap at Goodwood at the weekend.

The two David O’Meara runners, Burano and Mustaqqil, may prove the biggest dangers while the Dr Marwan Koukash-owned Energia Flavio is on an attractive mark if able to produce his best form of early last year.
