Along with hot favourite Minding the powerful Aidan O’Brien stable have a strong supporting cast in Ballydoyle and Alice Springs for Sunday’s Qipco 1000 Guineas at Newmarket so the Irish trainer must have a great chance of winning another fillies’ classic but all three may have to give best to the highly-regarded Lumiere on this occasion.

Regarded by trainer Mark Johnston as one of the best three horses he has had through his hands to date – a bold statement for someone who has been responsible for Guineas winners Mister Baileys and Attraction to name but two – so unless the Middleham handler is wide of the mark in his assessment the daughter of Shamardal looks good value at 6-1 to overturn Minding and company.

An impressive winner of a Newmarket maiden on her debut the filly, probably due to lack of experience, failed to cope with the finishing kick of Besharah in York’s Group 2 Lowther Stakes next time but reversed the form with that horse when winning a bunched finish in the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes the following month with Illuminate splitting the pair.

The bare form of that race does not cry out Classic winner but the mount of William Buick had to do the donkey work in that 6f contest and is almost certainly better than the result would indicate. Minding’s position at the head of the market is based on her comprehensive victory in the Fillies’ Mile but that may not have been one of the strongest renewals and it would be no surprise if she failed to confirm Moyglare Stud Stakes form with stablemate Ballydoyle. However if the reputation that precedes Lumiere is correct, the O’Brien pair could be fighting it out for minor honours.
