Hull have limited options to freshen up the squad with an ever growing injury list. Mike Phelan kept Tom Huddlestone on the bench for the draw with West Brom and he’s likely to be fielded as an anchor man to screen the back four here. Dieumerci Mbokani will be the lone striker and will need to use his physical presence to try and outmuscle the Newcastle defence.
Newcastle made multiple changes for the loss to Blackburn at the weekend and Rafa Benitez is expected to revert to his best XI for the trip to Hull. That would mean Jamaal Lascelles coming back in central defence and Chancel Mbemba dropping to the bench. This may be billed as a Premier League v Championship fixture but with the exception of Ryan Mason, Hull’s squad isn’t much stronger than the one that won promotion via the play-offs. Newcastle have been in cruise control for a good few weeks now and will be back to full strength here. This will be an entertaining League Cup encounter, that the away side can win.
