Prior to Organisedconfusion in 2011 the last six-year-old to prove successful in the Irish Grand National at Fairyhouse was Rhyme ‘ n’ Reason in 1985 for trainer David Murray Smith and jockey Graham Bradley. Later to join the stable of David Elsworth the horse is best remembered as the winner of another Grand National three years later, namely the Aintree version when cutting down Durham Edition in the closing stages after all but coming to grief at Bechers on the first circuit.
The Noel Meade-trained Bonny Kate may not go on to reach such exalted heights but the six-year-old mare can become another from that age group to take the Easter marathon on Monday afternoon. A decent novice hurdler last season the daughter of Beneficial has taken well to fences, winning her latest three, most recently when making all to take a Grade 2 novice chase at Limerick. Prior to that victory, Bonny Kate proved her effectiveness over an extreme trip when again making most to run out a six-length winner of a 3m 4f Grand National trial at Punchestown on the last day of January.
Time may show that the handicapper has underestimated the lightly-race mare in giving her a chase mark of just 137 and it would be no surprise to see the horse prove better class than her rivals, making the 10-1 available with Boylesports (5 places) the value bet of the race. With top weight Foxrock an unlikely starter there is going to be a substantial rise in the weights, a situation which should favour the selection along with chief market rival Vinitien De Mai who has done nothing but improve this season although the seven-year-old does not possess the scope of Bonny Kate.
Of the bigger priced runners the thorough stayer, Portrait King can go well at the 33-1 on offer with most bookmakers.
