Liverpool vs Roma Preview

Few would have predicted this pair to progress after the quarter final draw but no-one can say they don’t deserve their semi final places after eliminating two of Europe’s top rated clubs in the previous round.

Liverpool players can be forgiven for being focused on the Roma clash which no doubt contributed to allowing a two goal lead slip in the 2-2 draw at West Brom on Saturday.

Manager Jurgen Klopp started the game with a few first choice players on the bench and we can expect to see Roberto Firmino, Andrew Robertson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dejan Lovren and Alex Oxlade Chamberlain line up for the kick off on Tuesday.

Jordan Henderson returned to the side after missing the Champions League quarter final second leg against Manchester City and could retain his place in central midfield. Players’ Player of the Year Mo Salah came through the West Brom game unscathed and will be looking to add to his 40 goals in all competitions so far this season.

Roma’s preparations couldn’t have gone better with a confidence boosting 3-0 victory at SPAL ahead of the big night at Anfield. Diego Perotti returned to the squad after a three week absence and comes into the reckoning after being given a 15-minute spell on Saturday.

Eusebio de Francesco rested key players at the weekend and Alessandro Florenzi, Daniele De Rossi and Edin Dzeko are all expected to return to the starting eleven. Aleksandr Kolarov will undergo a fitness test on a muscle injury but there is no place in the Roma squad for Rick Farsdorp and Gregoire Defrei who are still on the road to recovery.

Liverpool vs Roma Prediction

There’s not much to choose to between Liverpool and Roma on domestic and European form. Both club’s lie third in their respective leagues, the Premier League club is already assured a place in next season’s Champions League although Roma have a little work to do to book a place via Serie A.

Liverpool went undefeated to finish top of their Champions League group which included Sevilla, Spartak Moscow and Maribor. They were drawn against Porto in the last-16, thrashing the Portuguese champions 5-0 in Porto before playing a stalemate in the dead rubber at Anfield. Klopp’s men were outsiders for the quarter-final tie against runaway Premier League champions Manchester City but made Europe sit up and take note by winning both legs, 3-0 and 2-1.

Roma had to rely on goal difference to top a tough group which included Chelsea, Atletico Madrid and Qarabag. They beat Shakhtar Donetsk on away goals after their last-16 tie finished 2-2 on aggregate. De Francisco’s men pulled off one of the most remarkable comebacks in Champions League history to defeat Barcelona 3-0 in the Olympic Stadium after losing the first leg 4-1 in Spain.

This is a tough game to call as both sides have attacking players that can change the game in an instant. Liverpool have two of the most prolific scorers in the Champions League this season with Salah and Firmino netting nine each. They could be the deciding factor in a game we expect to see both teams to score.

Liverpool and Roma are no strangers to each other and have met three times in pre-season tournaments in recent years which the Italian side have won by the odd goal on each occasion. But, Liverpool have had the say in competitive matches.

They were drawn against each other in the 2000/01 Europa League in which Liverpool progressed 2-1 on aggregate and the Merseysiders came out on top in the following season’s Champions League second group stage, holding their opponents 0-0 in Rome before winning the return fixture 2-0 at Anfield.

So far in this season’s competition, Liverpool have won 4 and drawn two of 6 home matches. They’ve kept four clean sheets and only failed to score once.

Roma have won one, drawn one and lost three of five away games, they’ve not kept a clean sheet on the road but have only failed to score once.
