Bundesliga preview – Mainz vs Stuttgart prediction

Mainz midfielder Danny Latza is serving his suspension after picking up a fifth yellow card against Eintracht Frankfurt. Swiss international midfielder Fabian Frei is close to a return having been sidelined for three months with a hamstring problem.

Stuttgart will miss the versatility of Florian Klein who could be out for some time with a back problem. The Austrian full back/midfielder joins compatriot Martin Harnik who is recovering from an ankle ligament injury and Daniel Ginczek who is also plagued with back trouble.

Possible Line-ups

Mainz: 4-2-3-1 formation: Karius; Borinski, Bell, Hack, Bengtsson; Baumgartlinger, Jara; De Blasis, Malli, Samperio; Muto

Real Sociedad: 4-2-3-1 formation: Tyton; Schwaab, Sunjic, Baumgartl, Insua; Gentner, Rupp; Maxim, Didavi, Kostic; Werner

Prediction

Mainz have recovered from a sticky patch in October with three wins and two draws in the last five games which has seen them climb to seventh in the Bundesliga. Martin Schmidt’s side will go fourth, level on points with third-placed Monchengladbach if they can win at home for the third consecutive game. Yunus Malli (8) and Yoshinori Muto (7) have scored 15 of Mainz’s 23 league goals so far and will relish the chance to play a side that has conceded four goals in each of its last three road trips.

Alexander Zorniger’s formation changes have yielded little fruit in a testing run of fixtures for Stuttgart. The team looks set for another survival struggle and while defeats at Bayern Munich and Dortmund were easy to predict, the 4-0 humiliation at home to Augsburg three weeks ago set alarm bells ringing. The 1-1 draw against Werder Bremen earned Stuttgart their first point in four games now Zorniger must find a way to shore up the defence which has conceded 14 goals in the last four away games.

Stuttgart must make a considerable step up on recent performances in order to gain anything from the visit to Mainz where a home win looks the safest bet.
