Manchester United vs Brighton Preview

Manchester United were eliminated from the Champions League on Tuesday night after suffering a 2-1 defeat at Old Trafford against Sevilla. United were clear favourites to progress after holding Sevilla to a 0-0 draw at The Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium two weeks ago but two second-half goals within four minutes from Sevilla’s Wissam Ben Yedder was too much for Mourinho’s men to come back from. Romelu Lukaku managed to claw a goal back in the 84th minute but it was too little too late for the home side. Mourinho will not accept being eliminated from two major competitions within one week and will be looking for a big reaction from his players on Saturday evening.

Old Trafford has generally been a fortress this season and prior to their defeat to Sevilla on Tuesday night, only league-leaders Manchester City have been able to leave as victors. Mourinho’s men hold the best defensive record at home in the Premier League where they have conceded just 7 goals in 15 games. However, United have now conceded in their last three matches at Old Trafford for the first time this season. Maybe too much shouldn’t be looked into this given that those matches were against Chelsea, Liverpool and Sevilla but Jose will be aiming to keep it tight at the back as usual and rely on the likes of Lukaku and Martial up front for goals.

Mourinho may opt to make some changes for this fixture given his sides recent Champions League exit. Victor Lindelof, Luke Shaw, Sergio Romero, Anthony Martial, Scott McTominay and Michael Carrick may all get a place in the starting eleven. Ander Herrera, Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones all remain sidelined through injury.

Brighton’s seven-game unbeaten run came to an end on Saturday when they were defeated away from home by Everton. A good run which saw them claim victories over Swansea and Arsenal gave them confidence travelling to Goodison Park but an own goal by Brighton’s defender Gaëtan Bong in the 60th minute put them behind before Cenk Tosun made it two for Everton, sealing the victory.

Despite picking up some good wins at home of late, Brighton have performed poorly on the road and have picked up just 10 points from a possible 35 in the league. What is perhaps more worrying for Chris Hughton’s side is that they have only managed to find the net 7 times in 15 away games which is the joint worst in the Premier League along with rock-bottom West Brom.

Brighton will be without key-man Anthony Knockaert after the midfielder was shown a straight red in the Seagulls’ defeat to Everton on Saturday and will start his suspension. Steve Sidwell and Jiri Skalak will also miss the match through injury while Gaëtan Bong and Dale Stephens are both doubts.

Manchester United vs Brighton Predictions

Mourinho will be disappointed with his sides recent exit from the Champions League and will want to do well in this competition since it his last chance of silverware this season. Despite United conceding in their last three matches at Old Trafford, we expect a solid display from Jose’s side. Brighton have been very poor on the road this season and have struggled for goals. Houghton’s side have failed to score in 7 of their last 10 matches away from home which isn’t ideal when playing against a side which has kept a clean sheet in 5 of their last 7 FA Cup matches. United have scored at least 2 goals in 6 of their last 7 in this competition and we expect them to do that again on Saturday against a Brighton side which haven’t kept a clean sheet in seven matches. We’re backing a home win along with over 2.5 goals which will see United progress into the semi-finals.
