Manchester United vs Liverpool Preview
Manchester United recovered from a potentially embarrassing defeat to Crystal Palace on Monday evening when Mourinho’s men came back from 2-0 down to win the match 3-2. A superb strike in injury time from Nemanja Matić sealed the victory for the visitors and meant they went home with all three points to reclaim their place in 2nd position from Liverpool in the Premier League.
With the Premier League title going almost surely to Manchester City, Mourinho will be determined to finish second and with Saturday’s rivals close on their tails, this could well be the match that decides which team does. A point would probably suit Mourinho but with Manchester City and Arsenal both to play, it’s Liverpool who has the slightly easier run of fixtures up to the end of the season and so he’ll be hoping to take away all three points which would see his side five points clear of third place.
Mourinho has an excellent record at Old Trafford this season and knows how to set his team up to not get beat. The Red Devils have the best defensive record at home in the Premier League so far this term, conceding just 6 goals across 14 games. Only one team has had the better of United at Old Trafford this season and that was the champions-elect back in December when Pep Guardiola’s men secured a 2-1 win.
Ander Herrera, Marouane Fellaini, Daley Blind and Phil Jones will all miss Saturday’s fixture due to injury, while Anthony Martial is also expected to miss the game after not featuring in United’s last match against Crystal Palace. Eric Bailly is likely to take the place of Victor Lindelof in order to strengthen the back four after their poor defensive display at Palace.
Liverpool are unbeaten in their last five league games, winning four and drawing one against Spurs. Their form away from home has also been impressive where they have lost just once in their last 8 league games, giving them the second best away record in the Premier League this season behind Manchester City. Their last away game was a 5-0 thrashing of Porto in the Champions League which saw them through to the quarter-finals after a 0-0 draw in the return leg on Tuesday evening.
Klopp has seemed to have tightened his team up defensively and they have now only conceded one goal in the last five games whilst scoring 13. Mo Salah has been a vital part of the team at the other end of the pitch and his goal against Newcastle on Saturday meant that he is now joint-top scorer with Tottenham’s Harry Kane.
Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain were all rested in the game against Porto and will have fresh legs for Saturday’s clash. Georginio Wijnaldum and Nathaniel Clyne are Klopp’s only main injury concerns.

Manchester United vs Liverpool Predictions
Manchester United have been shaky away from home, losing to Spurs and Newcastle before conceding twice against Crystal Palace. However, Mourinho’s men have been solid at home and he’ll likely deploy his usual defensive tactics rather than going all out to win the game. However, Liverpool’s strike force will prove a challenge for United’s back four with Salah and Firminho both on great form.
The last four meetings between these two sides have ended in draws with the last two at Old Trafford ending 1-1. We’re expecting Liverpool to get on the scoresheet but Mourinho will ensure chances are kept to a minimum. United have only failed to score once at home this season and so we wouldn’t be surprised to see the same result again on Saturday.
