Newcastle United take on Birmingham City in an FA Cup replay this Wednesday night. Read the match predictions to find out why a home win is the betting tip at St James’ Park. Newcastle come into this match on the back of a 1-2 win away to Brentford while Birmingham were held to a 0-0 draw at home to Nottingham Forest.

Newcastle United vs Birmingham City Preview

Newcastle will be without Dwight Gayle after he went off injured in the win over Brentford, leaving Daryl Murphy to start up-front. Jonjo Shelvey could return to the lineup after completing a 5-game suspension. Matz Sels will hope for a recall in goal while Vurnon Anita and Isaac Hayden are in the treatment room.

Birmingham have no fresh injury concerns, so Gianfranco Zola can name an unchanged side here. The Blues have adopted a 4-3-3 setup in recent weeks with towering striker Lukas Jutkiewicz the focal point of the attack. Jonathan Grounds and Jonathan Spector will be asked to get forward to provide additional width, which could leave the Blues susceptible to counter attacks.

Newcastle United vs Birmingham City Prediction

Having had a bit of a wobble towards the end of the festive period, Newcastle are back on top of the Championship after their win at Brentford. It was interesting that Ayoze Perez stepped up with a superb assist for Daryl Murphy after Dwight Gayle, whom they have relied on so heavily, went off injured. The return of Jonjo Shelvey will also be a huge boost and Newcastle will be confident of creating a few chances here.

Birmingham are without a win in six matches and are falling out of contention for the playoffs as a result. The Blues haven’t been great in front of goal recently and they couldn’t find a breakthrough against a very poor Nottingham Forest side at the weekend. One positive is that they produced a first clean sheet in nine outings but Newcastle will provide their defenders with a tougher test.

The league meeting between these sides ended up as a 4-0 rout to Newcastle. I can see a comfortable win for the hosts but I don’t think they’ll run away with it again. Birmingham are out of sorts and Newcastle are back in the winning groove, a 2-0 home win is the betting tip.
