Newcastle United vs Burnley Preview

Newcastle United have been very hit and miss this season and there seems to be some problems behind the scenes. Owner Mike Ashley has said that the club is still up for sale as the proposed takeover from PCP Capital partners seems to be off. The Magpies lost their last Premier League match, but a 3-1 loss at the Etihad against Manchester City is nothing to be ashamed of.

There are a few players that are missing for Newcastle. Aleksandar Mitrovic has not been in favour much this season, and he has been linked with a move away. Either way, he is injured and will miss out here. Florian Lejeune is missing so expect the centre back partnership of Jamaal Lascelles and Ciaran Clark to continue. Kenedy will likely make his debut here after signing on loan from Chelsea.

Burnley have gone off the boil a little bit after their fantastic start to the season. The Clarets haven’t actually won a match since the 1-0 victory over Stoke City on the 12th December. They have lost their last 4 games in a row in all competitions, but have had a decent rest as they were not in FA Cup action at the weekend.

Tom Heaton has returned to training after a long time out due to a dislocated shoulder, but Sean Dyche is expected to keep faith with Nick Pope, who has been excellent in the skipper’s absence. Former England winger Aaron Lennon joined Burnley from Everton and may make his debut at St James’ Park. Jonathan Walters and Robbie Brady are long term absentees.

Newcastle United vs Burnley Prediction

Newcastle are 15th in the Premier League before this round of fixtures, only one point above the relegation zone. They do have one of the best goal differences in the bottom half though, and considering how close it is towards the bottom this may be crucial come the end of the season.

Rafa Benitez seems frustrated by Newcastle’s failures in the transfer market. He has said this week that he presented Managing Director Lee Charnley with a list of transfer targets on January 1st and so far the only business the club has done is a loan deal for Kenedy from Chelsea. A goalscorer is needed to help the Magpies stay up.

Burnley still sit very comfortably in 8th place despite their poor run of form. Their last away game was a defeat to Crystal Palace and Sean Dyche will be desperate for his side to avoid a repeat of that on Wednesday evening.

This game is a tough one to call. Burnley have been the better of the two sides so far this season but have looked tired recently, picking up some poor results. Home advantage should help Newcastle, but Burnley will be solid enough to grab a point.
