Newcastle sit just a point above the drop zone and need every point they can get to widen that gap. Currently, this is one of the closest relegation battles the Premier League has seen with there being only seven points between second-bottom and ninth place.

Newcastle come into this game on the back of two consecutive 1-1 draws against Burnley and Crystal Palace. Two games from which Rafa Benitez will be disappointed his team didn’t take home all three points. Goals have been an issue for Newcastle this season and the Toon Army are waiting anxiously for new signing Islam Slimani to make his debut. The on-loan Leicester striker has been struggling with a thigh injury which kept him out of the 1-1 draw with Palace last weekend but has since made a recovery and has recently trained with the Magpies for the first time. It is unsure whether Benitez will start the Algerian forward but he is likely to feature at some point. Kenedy, who also joined the club on loan in the January window has made a positive impact in his first two games and will keep his place in the starting eleven. Goalkeeper Rob Elliot is still out through injury and Karl Darlow will again take his place. Ciaran Clark is a doubt for Sunday and will likely be replaced by French defender Florian Lejeune alongside captain Jamaal Lascelles.

The title race may look to be over for Man United but José Mourinho has his eyes set on second place. Thirteen points adrift from leaders Man City and five points clear of third-placed Liverpool, Man United will look to pick up three points at St James Park and hope Liverpool struggle away to a Southampton side who are unbeaten in their last six.

Mourinho will likely stick with the same back four that kept a clean sheet against Huddersfield at the weekend and could favour Paul Pogba who was snubbed in favour of Scott McTominay in their last game. Marcus Rashford is a doubt while Marouane Fellaini, Phil Jones, Daley Blind, Eric Bailly and Zlatan Ibrahimovic are all unavailable through injury.

New signing Kenedy will give Newcastle fans hope in creating chances but it is still unsure if Slimani will start and how much of an impact he will make. Benitez will likely rely on Gayle and Perez upfront to begin with but the two Newcastle forwards have only five goals between them all season.

Man United’s quality was boosted with the signing of Alexis Sanchez who grabbed his first goal for The Devils against Huddersfield and will no doubt be a threat to Newcastle’s back four.
