Newcastle United vs Southampton Preview
After going unbeaten for four games, including a 1-0 win against Manchester United, Newcastle suffered a 2-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday evening. Rafa Benitez’s side have improved of late and we’ve seen an increased energy and determination from his side who are fighting to remain as a Premier League club for a second consecutive season.
Finding the net has been an issue for the Magpies this season. With on-loan striker Islam Slimani still yet to make his debut, Newcastle have been without a prolific striker to turn to to guarantee goals. However, we’ve seen much more of an attacking threat lately from the northeast side who have looked like they are capable of scoring goals in most games. After two first half goals from Dwight Gayle against Bournemouth two weeks ago, Benitez will be disappointed his side couldn’t hold onto the lead and left Dean Court with just a point. However, the back four have been much more solid at St James Park where they are unbeaten in their last five and have conceded just five goals in their last seven games.
Jesus Gamez and Islam Slimani remain out while Jonjo Shelvey is still recovering from a knee injury suffered in the 2-2 draw with Bournemouth.
Southampton sit one place and one point beneath Newcastle in the league table making Saturday’s match one of the most important in the season for both sides so far. Both Southampton and Newcastle can be thankful to Mourinho’s men who fought back from 2-0 down to rob Cyrstal Palace of any points on Monday evening. Should Palace have held onto their lead, Southampton would have dropped into the bottom three with Newcastle a point above them. Thankfully for these sides, Palace and Stoke both have tough games against Chelsea and Manchester City at the weekend and so it is unlikely either will be dragged into the bottom three. However, both sides will be looking to pick up maximum points to extend the gap at the bottom and get three points closer to remaining as a Premier League club next season.
After going nine games without a win going into 2018, Southampton have now lost just once in their last ten games. After a 2-1 win away to rock-bottom West Brom, The Saints picked up a single point against Burnley and Stoke. However, three of the four wins they picked up during this time were in the FA Cup which leaves Mauricio Pellegrino’s side with just one league win in their last 16 matches. They’ve picked up 12 points from a possible 39 on the road this season but have only managed to claim victory twice which will worry Saints fans going into this crucial 6-point clash on Saturday.
Charlie Austin and Maya Yoshida both remain out for the Saints while midfielder Steven Davis is a doubt for the fixture.

Both sides desperately need the points to move away from the bottom three and this is the perfect chance to do so with both Crystal Palace and Stoke having tough games at the weekend. Finding the net has been an issue for both Newcastle and Southampton this season but Newcastle have shown signs of improvement of late and have looked a lot sharper going forward. We’re not expecting a goal fest in this nervy game but with the home advantage, Newcastle should be able to take the three points and pick up their fifth league win of the season at St James Park.
