Nottingham Forest vs Derby Preview
After suffering four consecutive defeats, Nottingham Forest are now five games unbeaten. Back to back wins against QPR and Birmingham followed by a 0-0 draw away to Norwich puts Aitor Karanka’s side in 15th position in the Championship, 14 points off a play-off place and the same amount above the bottom three. Following a poor run of form on home turf, Karanka will be hoping his side can build on their 2-1 victory over Birmingham two weeks ago and continue their unbeaten run.
Although Forest don’t have much to play for being in mid-table limbo, this is an East Midlands derby and the players will likely be fired up and ready to put in a performance. Karanka will remind his side that they haven’t been beaten by Sunday’s rivals at the City Ground since 2012 which is a record they’ll hope to extend for another season.
Chris Cohen, Jack Hobbs and David Vaughan remain out for Forest with long-term injuries. Given Forest haven’t lost in five matches, Aitor Karanka may opt to keep the starting XI which has gained the results in past weeks.
Derby have slipped down the table of late and are no longer looking like challengers for automatic promotion. Gary Rowett’s side are now six games without a win which has left them fifth in the league and just four points safe into the play-off places. With Middlesbrough and Bristol City playing struggling Barnsley and Burton at the weekend, a defeat on Sunday could mean Derby drop to 6th and just a point above Bristol who are eager to knock Derby out of a playoff spot.
Derby have generally been good on the road this season and only Wolves and Aston Villa have picked up more points than The Rams away from home. They’ll be looking to add to their away points tally on Sunday with a win in the East Midlands derby to keep their dreams alive of promotion into The Premier League.
Jamie Hanson and Sam Winnall remain out for Derby while Chris Baird is serving a suspension. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Gary Rowett make some changes to his starting lineup in order to find a way to pick up their first win in five games.

Forest come into this game on better form than the visitors but it is Derby who have the most to play for. With Forest finding goals of late we expect them to get on the scoresheet but this could be the first time since 2012 that the Rams find a way past Forest at the City Ground and we’re backing them to take home three points. Derby won the last meeting with Forest back in October at Pride Park Stadium with a score of 2-0. A goal in the first minute from Matej Vydra and one in the second half from David Nugent sealed a comfortable win for the home side.
Derby have won three of the last four meetings but we have to go all the way back to 2012 to find a time when they’ve beaten Forest away from home. The two sides have met four times since then at The City Ground where Forest have picked up two wins and there being two draws, including this fixture last season which ended 2-2.
