The 145th Open returns to the Links of Royal Troon and this Par 71 course (7,190 yards) can be a real menacing presence when the wind blows, or a nice walk in the park with plenty of birdies on a pleasant day.

Troon has not been on the Open rota since 2004 when it was won by the unheralded Todd Hamilton in a play off from Ernie Ells. It seems like an age ago that he used a little hybrid club to push and chip low runners into the greens and went some way to popularising the type of club in the UK.

A lot of the field who played there are either veterans now or were so young that it is hard to formulate any hard evidence to say that they definitely like the course. But as ever players who have a liking to Links will be on the short list. For In Play backers, there are opportunities in the first couple of holes and apart from the famous Par 3 Postage Stamp, which is a brute if windy, the front 9 is where you make your score. After that, it can be all about hanging on, with the 11th hole particularly being a card wrecker.

Looking for golf betting tips at Troon, the last edition was notable for how many players that contended were high on the stats for driving distance and players with a little extra muscle will be pinpointing the Par 5s this week. I believe that this where the Open will be won. Also, there is the odd hole on the front nine which could be drivable with favourable wind conditions. It’s also notable how the Americans have prospered here, with them winning the last 6 times at Troon.

Golf betting tips for the Open Championship

Henrik Stenson 30/1 E/W Paddy Power (8 Places) Henrik Stenson is starting to get to that point in his career where he's only got a few years left at a high and consistent level. He really should go well at this type of course, he's long, accurate, and those long, running low irons are made for this course. He's recently won the BMW and he had four decent rounds in the Scottish Open without getting in the thick of the action. Hopefully that was a good pipe cleaner for this week, he can disappoint sometimes, but I'm hopeful. Sergio Garcia 25/1 E/W Sky Bet (7 Places) Sergio Garcia has really impressed this year, though he's the type who needs things to fall in place. He won in the States this year, although he was doing a Procul Haram and was going paler as the pressure mounted. Having said that he had a very good US Open and didn't fade when others did. He's got a really good Open record, nine top ten finishes says it all really. He deserves a major and will be a popular figure on the course this week. Patrick Reed 60/1 E/W SkyBet (7 Places) Patrick Reed has had a fairly quiet season, but I think he is due a good week. He had a dismal start to the Scottish Open this week but finished very strong, playing the last three round in -12 under. He's got a great pitching and chipping action, and has been quietly going about his work when it comes to learning how to play links. As always with the brash American, if the putter behaves he can contend.
Martin Kaymer 50/1 E/W Paddy Power (8 Places)
For my last selection I will put up Martin Kaymer. Again like Reed, he's been bubbling under the surface and it looks as if a big week is coming soon. He's a proven a Links player, and has played well in exposed conditions at the Dunhill, where he's a past winner. He another with a very strong long game, and this two time major winner will not lack for confidence if he gets in the mix.
