Portsmouth vs Oxford Preview
Portsmouth sit 8th in League One on 52 points and are 5 points adrift of Plymouth who occupy the last play off spot. With nine games remaining there is enough time to close that gap but Kenny Jackett knows his side can’t afford to drop points if they are to have a chance of playing in the Championship next term.
Portsmouth have had an up and down season. After an excellent end to 2017 which saw Jackett’s side pick up seven victories in eight games, Pompey have now won just three games in 2018, losing eight and drawing two. They did pick up a 2-0 win in their last game away to Oldham which will lift spirits going into Sunday’s match. However, Jackett’s side have failed to win at Fratton Park this year and have picked up just two points in their last seven home games. They have had some tough opposition lately though against the likes of Shrewsbury, Scunthorpe and league-leaders Blackburn and so they’ll be looking to pick up their first win of 2018 on Sunday against a struggling Oxford to get back to winning ways.
Milan Lalkovic, Stuart O’Keefe, Danny Rose and Stephen Henderson remain out for Pompey through injury.
Oxford sit seven points below Portsmouth who are challenging for a playoff spot. However, they are also only five points off the relegation zone. Their recent bad form has seemed them slip down the table and they are in real danger of getting pulled into the relegation battle if they don’t start picking up points more consistently.
Oxford will take confidence from their 2-1 victory over 7th-placed Peterborough at the weekend which was their first win in six and only their second in ten. One advantage Derek Fazackerley’s club have is that they have a game in hand over the majority of teams around them in the table and so the gap between themselves and the bottom four could be widened to eight points if they take advantage of that extra fixture which should be enough to secure another season in League One next term.

Portsmouth vs Oxford Prediction
Neither side are in particularly good form at the moment but both come into this game on the back of a win last weekend. Portsmouth perhaps have slightly more to play for with challenging for a playoff spot and they’ll be looking to break their recent bad run of results at home with a win on Sunday. Oxford have just one league win away from home since November but have been able to find the net in many of those games. We’re backing both teams to score with Pompey just edging the win due to the home advantage.
