Rangers will be looking to bounce back from a 2-1 defeat away to Aberdeen and move up the table while anything but a loss may be seen as success for Partick Thistle who drew 1-1 with Motherwell last time out. The Gers sit 7th in the standings with 9 points but the Jags are propping up the table with just 5 points, albeit with a game in hand.
Joey Barton remains unavailable due to a club imposed suspension but Kenny Miller could return to the starting lineup. If so, it may be Martyn Waghorn who makes way after he failed to back up his impressive hat-trick at Queen of the South and put in a mediocre performance against Aberdeen. Mark Warburton has no fresh injury concerns, so drastic changes to the starting XI seem unlikely.
Having at least halted the losing streak, Partick Thistle boss Alan Archibald may be reluctant to tinker too much with his starting lineup. Keeping Ade Azeez as a lone striker will allow him to pack the midfield and try to stifle the Rangers attack. Rangers were done at the death by Aberdeen and cannot afford to sit and lick their wounds. That 2-1 defeat followed an easy 5-0 rout against Queen of the South but they drew 0-0 with Ross County prior to that. It’s still early days but the Gers will need to be more consistent if they are to be considered the force of old in this league.
With an Old Firm Scottish League Cup clash on the horizon, now is the time to put a run of results together. Success in the next three fixtures will send Rangers into that match with renewed confidence and an increased chance of gaining revenge over rivals Celtic.
Partick Thistle make the short trip across Glasgow hoping to get a positive result to lift the gloom. They lost four on the bounce but then showed great character to come from behind twice to draw 2-2 away at Kilmarnock. They gave themselves a better chance by taking the lead against Motherwell last time out but like Rangers, were done by a late goal.
The visitors are up against it here and their poor defensive record only adds weight to the case for Rangers chalking up an easy win. They’ll need the hosts to have a bad day at the office to get anything out of this game and I can’t see that being the case.
