La Liga preview – Sevilla vs Villarreal prediction.

Steven N’Zonzi was sent off for Sevilla in the Europa League tie in Basel on Thursday but it will not impact on the midfielder’s eligibility for La Liga game on Sunday. Benoit Tremoulinas, Sebastian Cristoforo and Michael Krohn-Dehli were rested for last weekend’s draw against Getafe and are set to return to league action this weekend. Unai Emery has no new injury concerns and has Marco Andreolli, Nicolas Pareja and Grzegorz Krychowiak working their way back to fitness.

Villarreal striker Roberto Soldado is suspended. Cedric Bakambu will expect to keep his place in the forward line after scoring both goals in the Europa League victory over Bayer Leverkusen and could be joined by Adrian Lopez who has forced his way into the first team picture after a long lay off. Defenders Jaume Costa and Mateo Musacchio face fitness tests while Jonathan Dos Santos and Samu will remain sidelined for another month.

Possible Line-ups

Sevilla 4-2-3-1 formation: Rico; Coke, Rami, Kolodziejczak, Tremoulinas; Cristoforo, N’Zonzi; Krohn-Dehli, Banega, Vitolo; Gameiro

Villarreal 4-4-2 formation: Areola; Gaspar, Bailly, Ruiz, Marin; Castillejo, Trigueros, Bruno, Suarez; Adrian, Bakambu

Statistics

  • Villarreal have won 5 drawn 4 and lost 1 of their last 10 matches
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Sevilla have scored an average of 1.3 goals and conceded an average of 0.9 goals per game
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Villarreal have scored an average of 0.9 goals and conceded an average of 0.2 goals per game
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 4 of Sevilla’s previous 10 matches
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 1 of Villarreal’s previous 10 matches

Prediction

Fifth-placed Sevilla have won 12 consecutive home games in La Liga and only conceded two goals in the last eight. Emery’s side has defeated Barcelona and Real Madrid at La Bombonera and most recently beat Eibar 1-0. Sunday’s fixture will be Sevilla’s second at home in the last seven competitive matches in which they have won 1 drawn 3 and lost 2.

Villarreal are fourth in La Liga with eight points more than their next opponents. Marcelino’s men went unbeaten in 14 league games before a surprise home defeat by Las Palmas last Saturday. Villarreal have the second best defense in La Liga having conceded 19 goals in 28 games but they have been struggling at the other end of the pitch lately, failing to the find the net in the last three away games which have all finished goalless draws.

Villarreal’s solid rearguard may just spell the end of Sevilla’s remarkable home record.
