Sheffield United vs Sheffield Wednesday Preview

It doesn’t get much bigger than this for these two sides, as the Steel City derby takes priority over everything else for 90 minutes this Friday evening. It is all about bragging rights here, pitting family and friends against each other in the stands. It is Sheffield United who come into the game on form and their fans will expect a win.

Chris Wilder’s side are going well in the Championship, sitting just outside the playoffs in 7th place. This is even more impressive when you consider that The Blades were only promoted to this level last season. There are no fresh injury problems for Sheffield United going into this huge game, so they should have a full squad to choose from.

Sheffield Wednesday are not going well and as a result manager Carlos Carvahal was axed. He has since moved to the Premier League with Swansea City, but The Owls have moved to appoint former Hertha Berlin and Stuttgart manager Jos Luhukay as their new boss. It remains to be seen how he adapts to English football, but Wednesday will need instant results, in order to climb the table.

The main injury news for The Owls surrounds long term absentees Fernando Forestieri and Keiren Westwood who will remain sidelined for this contest. George Boyd returned from injury in the FA Cup tie against Carlisle United on Saturday and could start this game too.

Sheffield United vs Sheffield Wednesday Prediction

Sheffield Wednesday will be desperate to avoid another defeat against their Steel City rivals. The first contest between these two sides finished in a 4-2 win for The Blades at Hillsborough back in September. Two goals from former Wednesday player Leon Clarke only rubbed salt into the wounds.

In terms of the last few fixtures, Sheffield United won their FA Cup match away to fellow Championship side Ipswich, while Wednesday could only draw away at League Two Carlisle. In their last Championship fixtures, United drew 1-1 at Pride Park against Derby County, while Wednesday suffered an embarrassing 3-0 defeat at home to Burton Albion.

A win for The Blades here at Bramall Lane would take them into the Championship play off places again, for the time being at least. Chris Wilder has earned many plaudits so far this season and even a top half finish for Sheffield United would be a success.

When a new manager comes in to a club, it is almost impossible to know how the players are going to react. Not many English football fans know much about Jos Luhukay but he is looking to prove his doubters wrong. Unfortunately for him, we expect Sheffield United to be the side celebrating at the end of this one and home advantage could be crucial.
