This three-year-old handicap is an open affair despite the small field and we are making Big Time Maybe today’s racing tip as he steps up to six furlongs for the first time. Tom Gascombe’s gelding has been a consistent performer over the minimum trip and the manner in which he finished his most recent race suggests he can do well over longer.

The son of Dandy Man ran creditably on the turf as a juvenile but found the winning touch when tried on the all weather, ending the season on a high note with wins at Kempton and Wolverhampton. He’s had two unsuccessful outings so far this year and caught the eye when running on late to finish runner up in a five horse race at Wolverhampton on his last outing in February.

Prince Ahwahnee showed potential when third in a 13-runner maiden at Newbury in September. It was a big improvement on previous attempts and the Harbour Watch colt could be threat if he’s trained on. However, this is a new experience for Clive Cox’s charge making his debut on the polytrack and first time in handicap company. It’s also his first outing for 224 days and may be wanting for fitness.

Al Barg is another who will benefit from today’s race. Richard Hannon’s gelding won one of his three juvenile races but is difficult to recommend after an eight-month lay off.

Branscombe was a winner over the course and distance in March but failed to cope with a 6lb penalty when last of nine three days later. Mark Johnson’s three-year-old is now up 10lbs for his Wolverhampton win and is hard to fancy given his inconsistent performances to date.

The going at Lingfield this afternoon is standard. The weather forecast is cloudy with sunny spells and a light south-westerly breeze.

Big Time Maybe looks to have progressed and his form is the strongest in the race. The extra furlong is unknown territory but the speedster can give account from the front judging on his latest outing.
