Rose Berry was out of her depth on All Weather Finals day at Lingfield a month ago but back on turf over a shorter trip could see the versatile filly return to winnings ways at Brighton this afternoon.

Chris Dwer’s four-year-old was no match for her rivals in the Lingfield event but had shown plenty of promise in two previous races, beaten a short head at Wolverhampton in February before finishing a respectable third in a Class 3 handicap on the same course in mid-March.

She returns to turf today, a surface on which she won twice last season, and the drop in distance should be ideal as she is a four-time winner over the minimum trip. Rose Berry has winning form off this mark and is expected to justify being selected for today’s horse racing tip.

The main market rivals are Super Julius and Mr Pocket. The former is trained by Eve Johnson Houghton whose yard is in decent form at present. Super Julius won over the course and distance off a 2lb higher mark last summer but the gelding’s best form is on faster ground and he didn’t seem to appreciate the good to soft going when disappointing last time out.

Mr Pocket ran well in a six furlong event at Wolverhampton on his last appearance but that was over 100 days ago. The four-year-old has since changed yards and been gelded and there is no way of knowing how the son of Acclamation will perform on the back of this upheaval.

Liberatum could emerge the biggest danger, the four-year-old gelding finished down the field in an apprentice race last time but has claims on the strength of his win at Wolverhampton in March. He was making his seasonal bow that day and will have the guidance of an experienced jockey this afternoon.

Nautical Haven hasn’t won for over a year and Suzi Best’s gelding has shown nothing in recent starts to suggest he’ll be a threat today.

The going at Brighton today is good to soft, good in places, and the weather forecast is cloudy with sunny spells and a moderate south-westerly breeze.

Rose Berry will find conditions more suitable than when stepped up in class on her last outing. The return to a shorter trip makes the filly an appealing prospect off her current mark.
