General Mahler has proved expensive to follow but is given another chance at Sedgefield today where he is selected for today’s horse racing tip.

Brian Ellison’s eight year old is yet to get off the mark in four attempts over fences but looks to be going the right way and can break his duck at the County Durham course this afternoon. The gelding has finished no worse than fourth in his brief chasing career and looks the pick of a moderate bunch on the strength of his latest outing at Hexham 10 days ago.

Sent off 2/1 favourite in a slightly stronger contest than today’s, General Mahler was just held by Loch Linnie with the pair well clear of the rest of the field. He’ll be fitted with head gear for the first time and a repeat of the Hexham performance should be enough to beat today’s rivals.

Red Giant has some useful hurdling form in Ireland and got off the mark on his debut for trainer Jennie Candlish at Kelso in September. The gelding has had two outings since but failed to make an impression. Back from a six month break, the seven year old is best watched today.

Oscar Oscar won twice in 2016 but has failed to trouble the judge in 13 outings since. The ten year old was well beaten in a similar event at Kelso last month and despite a 2lb drop in weights, may need further revision from the handicapper.

Quick Brew has had little racing since last winning in 2016. The ten year old gelding was placed three times last year in similar company but may need the run having been off the course since last September.

Trust Me I’m A Dr and Notonebuttwo are well out of the handicap however, the latter would have claims if new trainer Sue Smith can rekindle the 11 year old’s form of 2015 when the gelding won three races in succession.

The going at Sedgefield is good, good-to-firm in places. The weather forecast is cloudy with light rain and a light north-westerly breeze.

General Mahler finished well clear of the rest when runner up at Hexham last time and is expected to go well again with headgear on for the first time.
