Mark Johnston-trained Mildenburger went into notebooks as one to follow after a successful two-year-old campaign. The son of Teofilio won three out of five last season and looked the sort to develop into an even better three-year-old.

A winner first time out at Haydock, the colt’s most recent victory came in a mile Listed race at Salisbury in August. The win was sandwiched between two promising runs in Group 2 company, third in the Vintage Stakes at Goodwood and here at Newmarket on 30 September where he finished third in the Royal Lodge.

The Royal Lodge form looks rock solid after the winner, Roaring Lion, went on finish a close second in the Group 1 Racing Post Trophy and the second horse, Nelson, was turned out to win a Group 3 race at Leopardstown on Saturday.

The main betting rival is Kew Gardens, trained by Aiden O’Brien and ridden by Ryan Moore. The Galileo colt carries a 3lb penalty for his victory in a 10 furlong Listed Race in October where he beat a stablemate of today’s horse racing prediction. He was tried in a couple of Group events producing his best effort when a three-length second to Nelson in a Group 3 at Leopardstown. He ran on past beaten horses that day and he may struggle to live up to his 110 rating until moved up in distance.

Stage Magic showed good form as a two-year-old, the highlight being a Group 3 victory in Chantilly. The Godolphin colt was allowed to dictate that day but was found wanting next time out when finishing last of six in a similar event. Today’s trip should suit the son of Dark Angel but he must give the selection 5lb and the fitting of headgear suggests he has trouble concentrating on the job.

John Gosden saddles Msayyan who must improvement on the strength his two-year-old form if he’s to figure here. The Camelot colt was unlucky not to win first time out at Haydock but was a comfortable winner of a Nottingham maiden on his only other appearance. The yard won this race last term with Khalidi and in 2015 with Golden Horn so Gosden’s entry must be respected.

New Show won his only outing last season and while the Ayr form hasn’t amounted to much, the New Approach colt looks a better proposition to feature than Arbalet who was well beaten in a Group 3 last time and Fortune’s Pearl who has shown little in two minor races this season.

The going at Newmarket today is good to soft and the weather forecast is for sunny spells with little chance of rain and a moderate southerly breeze.

Mildenberger looks the type to develop into a group winner and holds entries for the Dante and Irish 2000 Guineas. It is hard to argue against the strength of his Royal Lodge form where he was beaten by two very smart animals and the weight he receives from his main rivals should be decisive.
