Euro 2016 preview – Turkey vs Iceland prediction

Having come away from the Czech Republic with a good win, Turkey manager Fatih Terim is not going to make any drastic changes to the team from that game. Therefore, striker Burak Yilmaz, who has been struggling with an injury, will not be risked in this match.

First choice Iceland goalkeeper Hannes Halldorsson won’t play any part in this match and therefore, reserve keeper Ogmundur Kristinsson is likely to get the nod. Central defender Kari Arnason was forced off after only 18 minutes against Latvia and will probably sit this one out for Iceland.

Possible Line-ups

Turkey: 4-1-4-1 formation: Babacan; Ozbayrakli, Aziz, Balta, Caner Erkin; Inan; Calhanoglu, Tufan, Ozyakup, Arda; Tosun

Iceland: 4-4-2 formation: Kristinsson; Saevarsson, Ottesen, R. Sigurdsson, Skulason; Gudmundsson, G. Sigurdsson, Hallfredsson, Bjarnason; Finnbogasson, Sigthorsson

Statistics

  • Turkey have won 6, drawn 3 and lost 1 of their last 10 matches
  • Iceland have won 5, drawn 3 and lost 2 of their last 10 matches
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Turkey have scored an average of 1.8 goals and conceded an average of 0.9 goals per game
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Iceland have scored an average of 1.5 goals and conceded an average of 1 goal per game
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 5 of Turkey’s previous 10 matches
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 6 of Iceland’s previous 10 matches

Prediction

After the excellent 2-0 win over the Czech Republic, third place in Group A is now there for the taking for Turkey. As the Turks hold the head-to-head advantage over Holland, a draw in this game will be enough to seem them claim at least a play-off spot.

Iceland come in to this match with automatic qualification guaranteed and can therefore play without any pressure, which may work in favour of Turkey, especially if they are not playing at maximum tempo. However, Iceland will want to finish their campaign off in style, having been held at home by Kazakhstan and Latvia in their last 2 games.

Turkey are unbeaten in their last 6 qualifying matches, including wins over Kazakhstan, Holland and the Czech Republic. In their last home qualification match, Turkey defeated Holland 3-0 and a passionate crowd will be on hand to hopefully witness another performance of the same calibre. Considering Iceland’s work is already done and Turkey know they can claim the third best placed team and automatically qualify, it’s difficult to see anything other than a home win here.
