Spanish La Liga preview – Villarreal vs Athletic Club prediction

Bruno will be back after suspension for this game and should slot in the midfield for the hosts. Manu Trigueros should continue to play following his impressive performances so far. Sergio Asenjo and Mateo Musacchio continue to be absent through injuries. The pairing of Samu Castillejo, Cedric Bakumbu and Roberto Soldado should continue as they start linking together well.

For the visitors, Mikel San Jose is likely to start in defensive midfield. Raul Garcia should be deployed from the start of the game after the Spaniard scored a debut goal at the San Mames. Aketxe should continue to keep Sabin out from the starting line-up.

Possible Line-ups

Villarreal: 4-4-2 formation: Areola; Costa, Ruiz, Bailly, Mario; Castillejo, Trigueros, Bruno, Nahuel; Bakambu, Soldado

Athletic Club: 4-2-3-1 formation: Iraizoz; Balenziaga, Laporte, Etxeita, De Marcos; San Jose, Benat; Aketxe, Raul Garcia, Susaeta; Aduriz

  • Villarreal have won their last 3 home matches in La Liga
  • Villarreal are unbeaten in their 10 home matches against Athletic Club in all competitions
  • In 11 of 13 Athletic Club’s last away games in La Liga, there have been under 2.5 goals
  • Villarreal have scored at least 2 goals in 5 of their last 6 home matches against Athletic Club in all competitions.

Marcellino’s team are unbeaten in the league this season and come with considerable momentum on the back of wins against Espanyol and Granada. Marcelino’s men suffered a mid-week reverse in the Europa League losing 2-1 to Rapid Wien. The ‘Yellow Submarine’ will look to quickly come out of the hangover and get back to track in La Liga.

After two defeats, Athletic Club finally got their season going with a win in the last round against Getafe. This was a welcome break for the Basque club who should look to gain points and move up the ladder. Aritz Aduriz will be vital for the visitors.

Villarreal is a tough proposition while playing at home and they have also started well in the season so far. Athletic Club may find it difficult to penetrate the hosts. Villareal may do just enough to scrape out a victory.
