Werder Bremen host bottom of the table FC Koln on Monday evening in a game where points are essential for both teams. Bremen are two points above the relegation play-off spot and nine ahead of automatic relegation. Three points on Monday for Florian Kohfeldt’s side would take them one step closer to safety and impose more misery on the visitors.
Bremen have had a mixed run of results lately, losing 1-0 away to Freiburg before picking up a win against Hamburger SV and a draw to Monchengladbach. However, they’ve proved very tough to beat at home of late and are now unbeaten in their last 10 matches at the Weserstadion. Monday’s opponents may seem a pushover given their league position but the visitors have now picked up two wins from their last three on the road, scoring six goals across those games and will fancy their chances of finding the net against Kohfeldt’s side.
In order to convert more draws into wins, Kohfeldt may opt to set up his team in a 4-3-3 formation rather than the 3-1-3-4 formation used in the 2-2 draw with Monchengladbach last week. This could see Aron Jóhannsson claim a place in the starting XI after grabbing the equaliser on Friday evening. Both Fin Bartels and Michael Zetterer remain out injured for Bremen.
FC Koln are bottom of the Bundesliga and are in real danger of automatic relegation. Stefan Ruthenbeck’s side are eight points adrift of safety with nine games remaining and so Monday night’s game is one of the biggest of the season for them. Second-bottom Hamburger SV travel to Bayern Munich on Saturday and a win away to Bremen should surely see FC Koln leapfrog Hamburger into 17th in the table and three points closer to safety.
Stefan Ruthenbeck’s side have started to score goals and it has mainly been their leaky defence which has caused them not to pick up points. They put two past Stuttgart in their last game and managed two against Dortmund last month but both games ended in 3-2 defeats. Ruthenbeck will fancy his chances on Monday but knows he will have to tighten up his defence considering the hosts impressive home form of late.
Christian Clemens and Sehrou Guirassy are the only players out for FC Koln. Leonardo Bittencourt could regain his place in the starting lineup on Monday after making a recovery from injury.

Bremen showed real fight to come back from two goals down last weekend against Monchengladbach and despite Koln’s fight against Stuttgart, they were unable to come back from 3-1 down after taking an early lead. It could be an open game but we’re backing both teams to score and the home side to take away all three points.
