West Brom invite the Saints back to the Hawthorns just two weeks after the sides battled against each other in the Premier League. Southampton came out on top in that game with a 3-2 win which was only the second time the visitors have managed to score over two goals in a match this season. That defeat was the second of three consecutive losses for West Brom with the lastest being a 3-0 hammering away at Stamford Bridge at the weekend.
Both sides have severely underperformed this season in the league with West Brom rock-bottom on 20 points and Southampton two places above on 26 points. However, they both saw off Premier League sides in the previous round of the FA Cup to reach the last 16 with West Brom picking up a surprise 3-2 win against Liverpool at Anfield and Southampton edging past Watford at St Mary’s Stadium.
After a poor run of results, Southampton were unbeaten in six before their match against Liverpool on Saturday where they suffered a 2-0 defeat. Mauricio Pellegrino’s side sit third from bottom in the Premier League and have a good chance of climbing out in the coming weeks with a string of fixtures against sides in the bottom half of the table. Following Saturday’s game against West Brom, the Saints are scheduled to take on Burnley, Stoke, Newcastle, Swansea and West Ham. All of which manager Pellegrino will see as winnable games and so will likely not see this cup fixture as a priority.
