Newcastle have just one long-term injury with Rolando Aarons out for the forseeable future with ruptured knee ligaments. The Latics sit second bottom of the table and have not won a home game since September. The home crowd will be up for the visit of Newcastle but this looks a tough game for the hosts.
Newcastle had been spurning chances in recent weeks, so Rafa Benitez will have been pleased with the scoreline against Birmingham. The Magpies lost their previous away game at Nottingham Forest in controversial circumstances but were unbeaten in 8 Championship games on the road prior to that, winning 7.
Although the results have been eluding Wigan, they have been making life difficult for their opponents. They defend quite well but offer little in attack which tends to produce a low-scoring game. Although Newcastle have enjoyed some big wins on the road this season, they do tend to be a little more cautious away from home. Newcastle should win this but I don’t expect them to run away with the game.
