Wigan Athletic entertain Sheffield Wednesday in a live Championship match this Friday night. Read the match predictions to find out why an away win is the betting tip at the DW Stadium. Wigan were last seen being outclassed by Manchester United in the FA Cup after a 4-0 drubbing at Old Trafford. Sheff Wed were in Championship action through the week and played out an entertaining 2-2 draw away to Bristol City.

Wigan Athletic vs Sheffield Wednesday Preview

Wigan have a host of new additions to choose from, having signed eight new players on transfer deadline day. Alex Bruce should get a debut in the heart of defence while James Weir is expected to pip Gabriel Obertan to the right-wing berth. Donervon Daniels is doubtful and Nicke Powell is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Sheff Wed brought in Jordan Rhodes from Middlesbrough on deadline day and he’s likely to start up-front alongside Fernando Forestieri. Midfielder Sam Hutchinson and striker Steven Fletcher are both banned for this match while Marco Matias is injured. Morgan Fox will hope to keep his spot at left-back after an impressive debut last time out.

Wigan Athletic vs Sheffield Wednesday Prediction

Wigan Athletic have put together a decent run of results to give themselves a shot at moving out of the relegation zone. Their FA Cup win over Nottingham Forest looked to be the perfect distraction as they backed that triumph up with a 0-2 win at Burton Albion, before winning 2-1 at home to Brentford.

Sheffield Wednesday are still pushing for the playoffs despite a slight dip in form of late. The Owls bounced back from their FA Cup exit against Middlesbrough by beating Huddersfield Town 2-0 at home. They gave a good account of themselves when going down 2-1 away to league leaders Brighton but will be disappointed that they couldn’t see the game out against Bristol City last time.

Although Sheff Wed have drawn a few games recently, they’ve lost just once in their last eight Championship outings. Compare that to Wigan who have won just two of their last nine and there is a case for the home side struggling here. Neither side have been banging in the goals and I’m predicting a low-scoring affair that the visitors should edge.
