Bookies slash odds on Teemu Pukki to win Golden Boost

Norwich City striker Teemu Pukki has moved to 7th favourite with some bookies to win the Golden Boot by being the Premier Leagues top goalscorer in the 2019/2020 season.

The Finnish forward has had an impressive start to the season scoring 4 goals in just two matches which currently puts him as joint top scorer alongside Manchester City’s Raheem Stirling.

Pukki netted a consolation goal on the opening day of the season against Liverpool at Anfield and added to his tally with an impressive hattrick at home against Newcastle United. He was a key player for Norwich last season and helped his side gain promotion into the top flight with 29 goals in 43 appearances for the Canaries which meant he was the Championships top scorer in the 2018/2019 season with 2nd top scorer Meal Maupay 7 goals behind on 22.

Bookies had the Norwich striker at 100/1 at the start of the season to take the Golden Boot but after his impressive performances in the opening two matches, some have slashed his odds to just 16/1 and online betting exchange Smarkets offering odds of just 10/1, although there isn’t a lot of liquidity in the market at the moment so those odds should be dismissed.

It’s hard to see Pukki finishing the season as top scorer if he remains with Norwich City given that bookies have them as third favourites to drop back into the Championship along with Sheffield United and Newcastle. However, the striker has proven that he can score goals at the highest level and should he continue to find the net for Norwich, his odds may remain short. Norwich host Chelsea in their next match at Carrow Road and with Chelsea’s poor form, many sites such as Mybetbuddy will be backing Norwich to find the net.

History shows us that the Golden Boot winner is usually with a top 6 club and you have to go all the way back to the 1999/2000 season when Sunderland’s Kevin Phillips won the award to find a winner who wasn’t with Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham, Man City, Man Utd or Chelsea.

The current favourites to win the 2019/2020 Golden Boot are Harry Kane of Tottenham Hotspur (best price 7/2), Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of Arsenal (best price 11/2), Mohammed Salah of Liverpool (best price 11/2), Raheem Stirling of Man City (best price 6/1), Sergio Aguero of Man City (best price 8/1) and Marcus Rashford of Man Utd (best price 14/1).

With the likes of Aguero and Stirling at Man City and the teams ability to create chances and score goals, it’s unlikely that Pukki will be able to compete in the number of goals all the way to the end of the season but there will be no doubt that some Norwich fans will be fancying a flutter on their star player retaining his form.
