Bayern have a 100% record at home in the Champions League while Arsenal remain undefeated on their travels in Europe.

Bayern Munich v Arsenal

Bayern Munich top goalscorer Robert Lewandowski will lead the line but the Bundesliga champions are likely to be missing Franck Ribery and Jerome Boateng due to injury. Xabi Alonso limped out of training and Joshua Kimmich is on standby should the Spaniard be ruled out. Arjen Robben started on the bench in the 2-0 win at Ingolstadt on Saturday but is expected to make the line up for what would be only his second start in the Champions League this season.

Arsenal can welcome back Nacho Monreal who was rested for the 2-0 defeat of Hull at the weekend. Mesut Ozil’s place is under threat following a poor run of form and Arsene Wenger has a number of players pushing for a start. Danny Welbeck has impressed since returning from injury and could make his first Champions League start since facing Barcelona last March. David Ospina will be handed the gloves as the designated goalkeeper for Champion League games.

Bayern Munich v Arsenal Prediction

Bayern come into the game on the back of a 2-0 win at Ingolstadt on Saturday when stoppage time goals from Arturo Vidal and Arjen Robben earned the three points. Carlo Ancelotti’s side returns to Allianz Arena where they’ve won the last 15 home games in the Champions League.

Arsenal struggled to beat relegation-threatened Hull at the Emirates on Saturday and were hanging on before Alexis Sanchez converted a 90th minute penalty to seal the points. The Gunners had previously lost back-to-back games in the Premier League and would have hoped to be in better form before taking on opponents who have eliminated them at stage of the competition twice in the previous three seasons.

Bayern beat Arsenal 5-1 on the Gunners’ last visit to Allianz Arena in November 2015.The Bundesliga giants aren’t quite the same force but should be capable of establishing a first leg lead.

Champions League preview – Bayern Munich vs Arsenal prediction

Pep Guardiola is still without Franck Ribery, Mario Gotze and Sebastian Rode for the visit of Arsenal. There are also fitness concerns over Holger Badstuber and Juan Bernat, although both could be available to play some part in the match. Defenders Javi Martinez and Mehdi Benatia are competing for a place alongside Jerome Boateng at the back.

Arsene Wenger has a growing injury list ahead of the crucial trip to the Allianz Arena. Defensively the Arsenal boss is without Hector Bellerin but it’s further forward where the real problems have developed. The likes of Aaron Ramsey, Mikel Arteta, Tomas Rosicky, Alex Oxlade Chamberlain and Theo Walcott, among others, are all unavailable for selection.

Prediction

After a perfect start to the season, where Bayern Munich won their first twelve competitive games in a row, there have been a couple of disappointments. The most notable one came at Arsenal two weeks ago, where Bayern went down 2-0 but the German outfit also drew 0-0 at Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga at the weekend. That being said, Bayern’s home form is superb and they will still feel confident of taking maximum points from this game.

Since the defeat at home to Olympiakos in the Champions League, Arsenal have enjoyed a good run of results. The only set-back came at Sheffield Wednesday in the League Cup, which not only resulted in Arsenal being knocked out of the competition but also injuries to some key players. However, the team responded well with a good 3-0 win at Swansea in the Premier League and having performed well in the Allianz Arena in recent visits, are capable of taking something from the match.

Despite the injury problems, Arsenal still have plenty to offer in attack and could catch Bayern out on the break and claim a point.
