Champions League football tips – Monaco vs Arsenal prediction

Arsenal go in to this match without Jack Wilshere, Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Debuchy, who are all missing through injury. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will also miss out with an ankle problem. Arsene Wenger’s main selection headache will be in attack and despite his poor performance in the first leg, striker Olivier Giroud could retain his place in the team, ahead of Danny Welbeck.

Monaco will have to make do without Andrea Raggi and Tiemoue Bakayoko, who both join long-term absentee Lacina Traore on the sidelines through injury. Other than that, Leonardo Jardim should have a full squad to pick from for this crucial Champions League match.

  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Monaco have scored an average of 1.3 goals and conceded an average of 0.6 goals per game.
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Arsenal have scored an average of 2.2 goals and conceded an average of 0.9 goals per game.
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 4 of Monaco’s previous 10 matches
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 8 of Arsenal’s previous 10 matches.
  • Monaco have been undefeated during normal time at home in their last 16 outings.

Arsenal head to the Stade Louis II knowing that need to make Champions League history, if they are to stay in the competition. No team, in the current format, has ever progressed needing more than one away goal and Arsenal will need to score at least 3, if they are to stand any chance of qualifying.

The enormity of the task ahead, is made even more difficult considering that Monaco are yet to conceded a single goal at home in the Champions League this season, from 3 matches played. Arsenal will require a similar result to the one achieved in their last away Champions League game, which saw Arsene Wenger’s mean defeat Galatasary 4-1. However, Monaco’s defence will not be as open as Galatasary’s was in that match.

Both teams enjoyed good wins on the weekend but everything is stacked in favour of the home team. Monaco have only lost once in their previous 9 home Champions League games and their miserly defence, will be in no mood to surrender a 3-1 lead.
