Champions League football tips – Paris St Germain vs Chelsea prediction

Paris St Germain find themselves in third place in Ligue 1, following a disappointing 2-2 draw at home, to struggling Caen on the weekend. It’s not the first time that Laurent Blanc’s team have had a poor result against a team from the bottom half of the table, with defeats to Bastia and Guingamp earlier in the season. The concession of 2 goals late in the game on the weekend, will give the PSG fans even further cause for concern approaching this match.

The same can not be said for Chelsea, who come in to the match sitting top of the Premier League table and well rested, having not played a match this weekend. It was the defeat to Bradford in the FA Cup, that blighted, what had been a great start to the season for the Stamford Bridge outfit. Since the 5-0 thrashing of Swansea City in January, Chelsea have been squeezing out results, winning by the odd goal.

  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, PSG have scored an average of 1.7 goals and conceded an average of 1 goal per game.
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Chelsea have scored an average of 2.1 goals and conceded an average of 1.2 goals per game.
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 4 of PSG’s previous 10 matches
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 5 of Chelsea’s previous 10 matches.
  • On their previous visit to the Par des Princes in 2014, Chelsea lost 3-1 in a Champions League quarter-final, first leg match.

PSG have started to pick up injuries at the wrong time and look set to have several first team players missing for this match, including Yohan Cabaye, Marquinhos, Serge Aurier and Lucas Moura. There are also doubts over French international midfielder, Blaise Matuidi. Chelsea have no such worries and will welcome back a fully rested Diego Costa to the starting line-up, following a domestic suspension. Also, having not played a game on the weekend, Jose Mourinho will have been working on his plan for this game throughout week.

PSG are unbeaten in 32 matches at home in European competition and have already beaten Barcelona this season. However, Chelsea will prove to be a tougher nut to crack and Mourinho will be keen to get back to Stamford Bridge with an away goal.
