Champions League preview – Valencia vs Zenit prediction

Valencia have three players missing for the visit of Zenit, with Diego Alves, Mat Ryan and Santi Mina out through injury. With two goalkeepers unavailable, Jaume will be given another opportunity to impress in goal. Alvaro Negredo should continue in attack, with Paco Alcacer having to settle for a place on the bench.

The only definite absentee for Zenit is goalkeeper Vyacheslav Malafeev, who is injured. Chances are, Andre Villas-Boas will stick with the same team which came back to earn a point against Russian league leaders CSKA Moscow at the weekend.

Possible Line-ups

Valencia: 4-3-3 formation: Juame; Cancelo, Mustafi, Abdennour, Gaya; Parejo, Fuego, Perez; Feghouli, Negredo, Rodrigo

Zenit: 4-2-3-1 formation: Lodygin; Smolnikov, Garay, Lombaerts, Anyukov; Garcia, Witsel; Hulk, Danny, Shatov; Dzyuba

Statistics

  • Valencia have won 3, drawn 3 and lost 4 of their last 10 matches

  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Zenit have scored an average of 1.8 goals and conceded an average of 1.1 goals per game
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 5 of Valencia’s previous 10 matches
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 6 of Zenit’s previous 10 matches

Prediction

Valencia have had a solid, if unspectacular start to the new season. Qualification to this stage of the Champions League was important but although the team remain unbeaten in La Liga after 3 matches, they have only won once and that win came at the weekend. Having played against Russian opposition five times at home in the Champions League, Valencia have won 4 and drawn 1, a run which Nuno Santo will hope to continue.

Zenit already find themselves 6 points off the pace in the Russian Premier League but the late equaliser against CSKA Moscow on Saturday, will give the team a bit of extra confidence ahead of the trip to Spain. Zenit’s recent form in the Champions League is not great, having won only 1 of their last 5 matches in the competition. To come away from Estadio de Mestalla with a point, would be considered a good result.

Neither team is in particularly good form at the moment and Valencia may come away with a narrow win.
