However, the race may not be the forgone conclusion many are expecting and the one to take advantage should the 5-4 market leader fluff his lines may be stable companion Native River, our racing tip is top price 10-1 with Ladbrokes for the championship contest.

While there is no doubt concerning the ability of the Colin Tizzard-trained favourite, Thistlecrack still looks very novicey on occasions and one of these days his natural exuberance will get the better of him and as we all know those stiff Cheltenham fences take no prisoners. His stablemate however looks tailor-made for the Gold Cup and the six-year-old could hardly be in better form following victories in two of the season’s major handicap chases.

At six the son of Indian River can only improve upon what he has achieved so far and his recent impressive victory in Chepstow’s Coral Welsh Grand National suggested that he had come on a good deal since taking Newbury’s Hennessy Gold Cup back in November. Whether he can continue that progression enough to trouble Thistlecrack is open to question but at a double-figure price he certainly looks the best value tip to be the one most likely to trouble the favourite.

The victory of Outlander in Ireland’s Lexus Chase hardly looked Gold Cup winning form and with reigning champion Don Cossack yet to be seen this season this looks a Gold Cup destined to stay at home. The only question is – which Colin Tizzard inmate will come out on top?
