Copa America Preview and Predictions

The 2015 Copa America is being staged in Chile, for the seventh time in it’s 44 year history. Played between the 11th of June and the 4th July, the tournament features a total of 12 teams, split in to three groups.

The Groups

The hosts, Chile, are in Group A, along with Ecuador, Mexico and Bolivia. Featuring players such as Claudio Bravo, Arturo Vidal and Alexis Sanchez, Chile should have enough to top the group and are 2/5 with Bet365 to do just that. Ecuador have to cope with injuries to key players, such as Antonio Valencia whereas Mexico have chosen a mainly home based squad, which will decrease their chances of success. Bolivia will hope to take advantage of this but will struggle to finish anywhere other than bottom of the group.

Defending champions Uruguay, find themselves in Group B and will face competition from Argentina to finish top. Uruguay have a strong team but will have to make do without the banned Luis Suarez, which is a big loss. Argentina have the likes of Javier Mascherano, Angel Di Maria, Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero to call upon, in a talented squad. With Paraguay and tournament newcomers Jamaica making up the group, it’s little wonder that Argentina are favourites to win the group at 2/7, with Uruguay at 3/1.

Finally, Group C, which is home to Brazil, Colombia, Peru and Venezuela. Despite missing some important players such as Luis Gustavo, Marcelo and Oscar, Brazil can still upon Neymar among others. The attacking threat of Colombia was there for all to see in the World Cup and they should have no problem progressing from the group, along with Brazil. In fact, at 7/4 with Bet365 to win the group, Colombia could be worth a punt.

The Final Stages

In to the knockout stages and the way the teams finish in their groups, could have a big impact on who makes the final. The winners of Group C, which is likely to be either Brazil or Colombia, will face the runners-up of Group B, likely to be Argentina or Uruguay. Far from ideal. However, the winner of Group A, will meet a third place finisher and this should ensure a place in the semi-finals. Chile will be looking to take advantage of this. A Chile vs Brazil/Colombia semi-final is a distinct possibility. Whether Chile have the quality to defeat either of these teams is questionable and their tournament may come to an end at the semi-final stage.

Ladbrokes offer 10/1 for an Argentina vs Colombia Copa America final.

Given their potential route through to the final, Colombia could cause a surprise and make through. Boasting attacking players such as James Rodriguez, Jackson Martinez, Carlos Bacca and Radamel Falcao, Colombia will be a very dangerous opponent. Colombia are 6/1 with Bet365 to win the the 2015 Copa America.

Top Goalscorer

The top goalscorer market is led by Lionel Messi and Neymar but at 10/3 and 13/2 respectively with Bet365, they do not present great value. However, Neymar’s team-mate, Roberto Firmino is certainly worth backing at 16/1 with Bet365. Playing up-front, with Neymar creating the chances, there should be goals coming Firmino’s way in this tournament. Radamel Falcao comes in to the Copa America off a disappointing season at club level but remains the main man for Colombia. With a bit to prove and possibly in the shop window, 18/1 with SkyBet for Falcao to be the Copa America top scorer is tempting.
