Euro 2016 preview – Republic of Ireland vs Germany prediction

Ireland are waiting on the fitness of right-back Seamus Coleman ahead of this crucial Euro 2016 qualifier. However, central defender Ciaran Clark is definitely out of the team and therefore, Martin O’Neil will be hoping that Marc Wilson is available for selection. James McClean and Glen Whelan are both suspended.

Germany manager Joachim Low has none of the injury and suspension concerns of Martin O’Neil and Ireland. Therefore, his team could be very similar to that which triumphed in Scotland last time out, with the addition of Marco Reus, in what looks a formidable attacking threat for Germany.

Possible Line-ups

Republic of Ireland 4-3-1-2 formation: Given; Coleman, O’Shea, Wilson, Brady; McCarthy, McGeady, Hendrick; Hoolahan; Walters, Keane

Germany: 4-2-3-1 formation: Neuer; Can, Boateng, Hummels, Hector; Schweinsteiger, Kroos; Muller, Reus, Ozil; Gotze

Statistics

  • Republic of Ireland have won 5, drawn 4 and lost 1 of their last 10 matches
  • Germany have won 6, drawn 2 and lost 2 of their last 10 matches
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Republic of Ireland have scored an average of 2.1 goals and conceded an average of 0.6 goals per game
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Germany have scored an average of 2.4 goals and conceded an average of 1 goal per game
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 4 of Republic of Ireland’s previous 10 matches
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 6 of Germany’s previous 10 matches

Prediction

Ireland come in to this match in great form, having gone unbeaten in their last 6 games. Their most recent fixtures produced a 1-0 over Georgia and a 4-0 win at Gibraltar. Going into this match, Ireland sit in third place in their group, on 15 points, 4 behind their opponents Germany and 2 points behind second place team Poland. Having held Germany to a 1-1 draw in Gelsenkirchen earlier in the group, Martin O’Neil will feel that with home advantage, his team have a chance of upsetting the world champions.

Following their world cup triumph, Germany struggled to get going, perhaps understandably. However, despite a defeat to Poland and being held at home by Ireland, Germany have only struggled in friendly matches. In competitive games, the Germans have won their last 5 and they sit top of the group as a result. Joachim Low will be confident, having defeated Scotland away last time out, his team have the talent to also turn over Ireland.

Ireland have been in decent form but have players out and with Germany back to winning ways in competitive matches, they have the fire-power to see off their hosts.
