Euro Under 21 Championship football tips – Sweden U21 vs England U21 prediction

Sweden will have to make do without defender Alexander Milosevic, who was sent off in the first-half of their opening match against Italy. Victor Nilsson-Lindelof will come in to the centre of Sweden’s defence to replace him. Otherwise, having shocked Italy by coming back to win with 10 men, changes will be minimal.

The major injury concern for England continues to be John Stones and the Everton defender is likely to miss out again in this one. Liam Moore started the match against Portugal but faces competition from Michael Keane in the centre of defence. Jesse Lingard, Alex Pritchard and Will Hughes are all fighting for a place in the midfield.

Possible Line-ups

Sweden U21: 4-4-2 formation: Carlgren; Augustinsson, Helander, Nilsson-Lindelof, Baffo; Larsson, Lewicki, Hiljemark, Khalili; Guidetti, Thelin

England U21: 4-2-3-1 formation: Butland; Garbutt, Gibson, Moore, Jenkinson; Chalobah, Ward-Prowse; Pritchard, Hughes, Redmond; Kane

  • Sweden U21 have won 5, drawn 4 and lost 1 of their last 10 matches
  • England U21 have won 8 and lost 2 of their last 10 matches
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Sweden U21 have scored an average of 1.8 goals and conceded an average of 1 goal per game
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, England U21 have scored an average of 1.8 goals and conceded an average of 0.9 goals per game
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 5 of Sweden U21’s previous 10 matches
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 6 of England U21’s previous 10 matches
  • The last time these teams met was in a friendly back in 2013 and England ran out 4-0 winners

Having lost to Portugal and with Italy still to come, this is a must win match for the England Under 21’s. Gareth Southgate will be pleased with the way his team played, despite the 1-0 defeat to Portugal and there is enough talent in the team to cause Sweden problems at the back.

Confidence will be high in the Swedish camp following their 2-1 win over Italy. Hakan Ericsson knows that a win here will be enough to see Sweden make it through to the semi-final stage. Knowing that England really need to win in order to give themselves a chance to progress, the pressure will be off for Sweden, who will probably be happy to take a point.

With the threat that England showed in the attacking third against Portugal, they have more than enough to score a couple of goals in this game and that should be enough for the win. However, Sweden are undefeated in their last 8 matches and will be a tough team to beat.

We say: 1-1 at 11/2 with Bet365
