Spanish Super Cup football tips – Athletic Bilbao vs Barcelona prediction

Athletic Bilbao manager Ernesto Valverde, has a number of injury concerns ahead of the Spanish Super Cup, first leg. Iker Muniain and Jonas Ramalho are both long term casualties and Inaki Williams has only recently returned to training. Mikel Rico and Ander Iturraspe are also out with injuries, giving Bilbao limited options to choose from.

Neymar is struggling to return due to an illness and Jordi Alba is also likely to miss out for Barcelona with an injury. Therefore, Jeremy Mathieu could continue at left-back, with Rafinha and Pedro competing for a place in the starting XI, following their goals in the UEFA Super Cup on Tuesday night.

Possible Line-ups

Athletic Bilbao: 4-2-3-1 formation: Iraizoz; Marcos, Laporte, Viguera, Balenziaga; Gurpegi, San Jose; Gomez, Benat, Sasueta; Aduriz

Barcelona: 4-3-3 formation: Ter Stegen; Alves, Pique, Mascherano, Mathieu; Busquets, Rakitic, Iniesta; Rafinha, Messi, Suarez

  • Athletic Bilbao have won 2, drawn 4 and lost 4 of their last 10 matches
  • Barcelona have won 5, drawn 3 and lost 2 of their last 10 matches
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Athletic Bilbao have scored an average of 1 goal and conceded an average of 1.3 goals per game
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Barcelona have scored an average of 2.2 goals and conceded an average of 1.6 goals per game
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 2 of Athletic Bilbao’s previous 10 matches
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 9 of Barcelona’s previous 10 matches
  • Barcelona have scored 12 goals in their last 4 meetings with Athletic Bilbao

Bilbao have already tasted competitive action this season, seeing off Inter Baku in the UEFA Europa League qualifying rounds, although this is going to much a stiffer test of their credentials. With a number of matches coming up in such a short period of time, coupled with a long injury list, Bilbao have a testing first month of the season ahead of them.

It’s one game played, one trophy in the cabinet as far as Barcelona are concerned and this will be another they hope to claim early on in the season. Luis Enrique’s team are looking red-hot in attack, even without Neymar in the team and will be looking to score goals in this first leg. However, having played 120 minutes on Tuesday night in warm conditions, it remains to be seen what level of intensity Barcelona can bring to this match.

With so many players missing, this is going to be an uphill struggle for Bilbao and even with some tiredness in their legs, Barcelona have enough to take a lead back to the Camp Nou for the second leg.

We say: Barcelona to win and both teams to score at 7/4 with Bet365
