La Liga preview – Athletic Club vs Sporting Gijon prediction

Athletic Club are definitely without Jonas Romalho and Mikel Rico, who are both injured. There are also concerns over the fitness of Ander Iturraspe and Markel Susaeta, with the latter the most likely to make it out of the two.

Sporting Gijon only have one injury concern but it’s joint top goalscorer Antonio Sanabria who could miss out. Last weekend, both Carlos Castro and Angel Guerrero featured up-front during the course of the match and Guerrero netted a last minute equaliser and may therefore get the nod.

Possible Line-ups

Athletic Club: 4-2-3-1 formation: Iraizoz; Marcos, Laporte, Etxeita, Balenziaga; Jose, Benat; Susaeta, Garcia, Williams; Aduriz

Sporting Gijon: 4-2-3-1 formation: Garcia; Lora, Hernandez, Bernardo, Canella; Alvarez, Cases; Halilovic, Jony, Menendez; Guerrero

Statistics

  • Athletic Club have won 4, drawn 2 and lost 4 of their last 10 matches
  • Sporting Gijon have won 3, drawn 3 and lost 4 of their last 10 matches
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Athletic Club have scored an average of 1.6 goals and conceded an average of 1.4 goals per game
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Sporting Gijon have scored an average of 1.1 goals and conceded an average of 1.2 goals per game
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 7 of Athletic Club’s previous 10 matches
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 5 of Sporting Gijon’s previous 10 matches

Prediction

Athletic Club come in to this game hovering dangerously above the relegation zone but form has improved of late. Ernesto Valverde’s team have lost just one of their last five matches in all competitions and are unbeaten in their last three. In the last La Liga game at the San Mames, Athletic Club defeated Valencia 3-1 and then went on to pick up a point at Deportivo La Coruna, scoring 5 goals in the process.

Sporting Gijon currently sit a point above their opponents in the La Liga table and have picked up 4 points from their last two games. Last weekend, Abelardo’s team required a last minute equaliser to take a point from their home match against Granada and it’s the home form which has been a problem. Away from home, Sporting Gijon have picked up 6 points, defeating both Espanyol and Deportivo La Coruna.

Both teams come in to this game having found some form in-front of goal. Sporting are definitely performing better away from home and could come away from this with a point.
