La Liga preview – Malaga vs Athletic Bilbao prediction.

Malaga top scorer Charles is back from suspension to partner Duje Cop up front. Right-back Roberto Rosales earned a suspension for his yellow card against Granada last weekend and is likely to be replaced by Miguel Torres. Regular goalkeeper Carlos Kameni and wideman Juankar Lopez have returned to training and could come into manager Javi Gracia’s plans for Sunday.

Aritz Aduriz and Inaki Williams are doubts for this weekend leaving Bilbao with the prospect of playing without their two leading goal scorers. Ernesto Valverde isn’t left with many options and Borja Viguera could be given his first start in La Liga this season if both players fail fitness tests. Centre-back Eneko Boveda limped out of the Europa League quarter-final on Thursday and was replaced by defensive midfielder Ander Iturraspe who could be asked to play the role again.

Possible Line-ups

Malaga 4-4-2 formation: Ochoa; Torres, Albentosa, Weligton. Ricca; Anor, Recio, Camacho, Castro; Charles, Cop

Athletic Bilbao 4-2-3-1 formation: Iraizoz; de Marcos, Etxeita, Iturraspe, Balenziaga; Jose, Benat; Susaeta, Garcia, Lekue; Aduriz

Statistics

  • Athletic Bilbao have won 6 drawn 1 and lost 3 of their last 10 matches
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Malaga have scored an average of 0.9 goals and conceded an average of 1.3 goals per game
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Athletic Bilbao have scored an average of 1.7 goals and conceded an average of 1 goal per game
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 3 of Malaga’s previous 10 matches
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 6 of Athletic Bilbao’s previous 10 matches

Prediction

Malaga are unbeaten in the last five games but three of them have been drawn. The victories over Sporting Gijon (1-0) and at Real Betis (1-0) are the only two wins in their last nine in La Liga. Malaga’s home form has been inconsistent throughout the season, with 6 wins, 5 draws and 4 defeats in the league, although they have taken four points for the last two.   Athletic Bilbao must recover from the disappointment of going out of Europe after a penalty shoot-out in Sevilla where they had come back from a 2-1 first leg deficit. Valverde’s men must now press on to ensure they hold onto a place in next season’s competition. Their league form has been good in the last six weeks with 5 wins 1 draw and 1 defeat in the last seven game and have won three of the last five away games. Bilbao have not drawn away from home in La Liga since last November but may have to settle for a share of the points against Malaga who are proving hard to beat.
