La Liga preview – Rayo Vallecano vs Atletico Madrid prediction

Rayo Vallecano have three players suspended following the game at Real Madrid on 20 December. Tito and Raul Baena were given their marching orders in the 10-2 defeat while Nacho Martinez collected his fifth yellow card. Real Madrid loanee Diego Llorente returns to defence after being ineligible to play against his main club and left back Razvan Rat could be called into action having missed the last six weeks due to a shoulder injury. German midfielder Patrick Ebert is out for the season and so too is goalkeeper Antonio Martinez.

Atletico Madrid defender Filipe Luis and midfielder Gabi are both suspended, Luis picked up his fifth yellow card in the 1-0 defeat at Malaga last time where Gabi was sent off after being carded twice in the game. Jackson Martinez provides an attacking option for coach Diego Simeone having recovered from an ankle injury however Luciano Vietto may be asked to start up front in preference to Fernando Torres. Tiago Mendes continues on the road to recovery from a broken shinbone and won’t been seen in action until late February at the earliest.

Prediction

Rayo have slumped into the relegation zone after four successive defeats in La Liga. The 10-2 defeat at the Bernabeu was costly in more ways than one as Rayo have lost the services of three players due to indiscipline. Paco Jamez’ side were defeated 3-0 by Athletic Club and 2-1 by Malaga in the last two home games making it four losses in eight league games at the Rayo Vallecano Stadium this season.

Atletico are looking to bounce back from a surprise defeat at Malaga before Christmas. The 1-0 loss ended a run of nine games unbeaten in La Liga and 15 unbeaten in all competitions. Simeone’s men have won five of eight away games in the league while conceding just three goals.

Atletico can show the result in Malaga was a one-off by returning to winning ways against a  Rayo Vallecano side that suffered a terrible mauling last time out..
