La Liga preview – Villarreal vs Real Madrid prediction

Villarreal left back Jaume Costa is doubtful after being brought off at the start of the second half of the 2-1 victory over Rayo Vallecano last weekend. On the other flank, first choice right back Mario Gaspar is still recovering from a hamstring problem that has kept him out of the last four games. Forwards Adrian and Leo Baptistao continue to be sidelined with hamstring injuries while veteran defender Daniel Bonera is absent due to calf strain.

Real Madrid centre back Sergio Ramos has been struggling with a shoulder injury for most of the season and is hoping three weeks rest is sufficient to allow his return to action on Sunday. Raphael Varane will take at least a week more to recover from a hamstring injury and a similar problem will keep Daniel Carvajal out of the side for few more weeks.

Possible Line-ups

Villarreal: 4-4-2 formation: Areola; Mario, Baily, Ruiz, Marin; Dos Santos, Pina, Bruno, Suarez; Soldado, Bakambu

Real Madrid: 4-3-3 formation: Navas; Vazquez, Pepe, Nacho, Danilo; Modric, Kroos, Rodriguez; Ronaldo, Benzema, Bale

Statistics

  • Villarreal have won 4 drawn 3 and lost 3 of their last 10 matches
  • Real Madrid have won 8, drawn 0 and lost 2 of their last 10 matches
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Villarreal have scored an average of 1.3 goals and conceded an average of 1.5 goals per game
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Real Madrid have scored an average of 3 goals and conceded an average of 1.4 goals per game
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 6 of Villarreal’s previous 10 matches
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 8 of Real Madrid’s previous 10 matches

Prediction

Villarreal have not defeated Sunday’s opponents in ten games stretching back to May 2009 but have managed to take a point from two of their last three meetings with Real Madrid at the Madrigal. Marcelino’s men have only lost one competitive home match this season, dropping just five out of a possible 21 league points on their own turf.

Back-to-back defeats against Sevilla and Barcelona in La Liga sent shock waves round the Bernabeu last month and the attitude of some players came under question when Real conceded three late goals in the 4-3 Champions League win at Shakhtar Donetsk in the following game. Rafa Benitez may have solved some issues judging by recent results which sees Real on a run of five consecutive wins in all competitions and the return of their ruthless streak in the 8-0 rout of Malmo in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Real Madrid are building up a head of steam that will take some stopping, 21 goals in the last five games is a compelling stat when considering Villarreal must field a weakened back line.
