Premier League sides Arsenal and Southampton meet in the EFL Cup this Wednesday. Read the match predictions to find out why a home win is the betting tip at the Emirates. The Gunners come into this match on the back of a convincing 3-1 home win over Bournemouth while Saints won 1-0 at home to Everton.
Arsenal vs Southampton Preview
Arsenal have used Emiliano Martinez in the previous rounds and the goalkeeper is likely to come back in here. The hosts are light on options at right-back, meaning Carl Jenkinson should continue there with Gabriel Paulista and Rob Holding likely to get a rare start in central defence. Arsene Wenger reportedly wants to rest Alexis Sanchez and Theo Walcott for this match and with Olivier Giroud doubtful, Lucas Perez looks set to lead the line.
Southampton had both Sofiane Boufal and Steven Davis out with an illness against Everton and the pair remain doubtful here. Dusan Tadic has missed the last few games with a broken nose and is another who looks likely to miss this match. Matt Targett, Jérémy Pied, Harrison Reed, Jake Hesketh and Alex McCarthy are all out injured. Josh Sims made a pleasing debut at the weekend and could keep his place on the left-flank for this tricky cup tie.

Arsenal vs Southampton Prediction
Arsenal have just come through a run of difficult fixtures without suffering defeat. They played out a 1-1 draw at home to rivals Tottenham Hotspur and snatched a late point when drawing 1-1 away to Manchester United. They then gave as good as they got in a 2-2 thriller against PSG in the Champions League and it was back to business as usual last time out.
Southampton have been struggling to balance domestic and European duties and this cup fixture adds more to their busy schedule. Saints lost 2-1 away to Hull before doing well to hold Liverpool to a 0-0 draw but were then beaten 1-0 away to Sparta Prague. They caught Everton napping with an early goal on Sunday but were unable to add to that and have been struggling for goals in general.
Arsenal beat Southampton 2-1 in the Premier League back in September and haven’t lost at home since the opening day of the season. Southampton have managed just a single win in 9 on the road this season ad have failed to score in 5 of those away games. The visitors may get on the score sheet with Arsenal making a few changes but I still expect the hosts to prevail here.

Premier League preview – Arsenal vs Southampton prediction.
Arsenal striker Alex Sanchez scored the winner in the FA Cup Fourth Round tie against Burnley on Saturday and is line for his first Premier League start since November. Gabriel is set to continue at centre back while Per Mertesacker sits out the first of his two-match suspension after seeing red against Chelsea. Tomas Rosicky has a thigh strain and joins Jack Wilshere and Santi Cazorla on the injured list. Danny Welbeck is back in training after a long absence but is unlikely to feature.
Shane Long received treatment on an ankle knock following the 1-0 victory at Old Trafford a week past Saturday but should be fit when Southampton visit London. Jordy Clasie may be preferred to James Ward-Prowse in midfield as the Dutchman is seen to have more defensive qualities. Graziano Pelle and Steven Davis are doubtful starters on Tuesday. Jay Rodriguez is close to a comeback from the ankle injury that has kept him out since October while Florin Gardos and Gaston Ramirez are also sidelined.

Prediction
Second-placed Arsenal have gone three Premier League games without a win and trail leaders Leicester by three points. Draws at Liverpool and Stoke were followed by a 1-0 home defeat to Chelsea when the Gunners were reduced to ten men after just 18 minutes. Arsene Wenger made a number of changes for the 2-1 FA Cup victory at the Emirates on Saturday and will revert to a more experienced side in the quest for three vital points against the Saints.
Southampton ended a run of five league games without a win when beating Arsenal 4-0 at St Mary’s on Boxing Day. Ronald Koeman’s side lost the next three games but arrested the slide with a 2-0 win at home to Watford on 13 January and have followed up by beating West Brom 3-0 at St Mary’s and Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford.
Arsenal will be out to avenge the Boxing Day humiliation and have been very reliable to follow at home this season.
