Premier League preview – Arsenal vs Southampton prediction.

Arsenal striker Alex Sanchez scored the winner in the FA Cup Fourth Round tie against Burnley on Saturday and is line for his first Premier League start since November. Gabriel is set to continue at centre back while Per Mertesacker sits out the first of his two-match suspension after seeing red against Chelsea. Tomas Rosicky has a thigh strain and joins Jack Wilshere and Santi Cazorla on the injured list. Danny Welbeck is back in training after a long absence but is unlikely to feature.

Shane Long received treatment on an ankle knock following the 1-0 victory at Old Trafford a week past Saturday but should be fit when Southampton visit London. Jordy Clasie may be preferred to James Ward-Prowse in midfield as the Dutchman is seen to have more defensive qualities. Graziano Pelle and Steven Davis are doubtful starters on Tuesday. Jay Rodriguez is close to a comeback from the ankle injury that has kept him out since October while Florin Gardos and Gaston Ramirez are also sidelined.

Prediction

Second-placed Arsenal have gone three Premier League games without a win and trail leaders Leicester by three points. Draws at Liverpool and Stoke were followed by a 1-0 home defeat to Chelsea when the Gunners were reduced to ten men after just 18 minutes. Arsene Wenger made a number of changes for the 2-1 FA Cup victory at the Emirates on Saturday and will revert to a more experienced side in the quest for three vital points against the Saints.

Southampton ended a run of five league games without a win when beating Arsenal 4-0 at St Mary’s on Boxing Day. Ronald Koeman’s side lost the next three games but arrested the slide with a 2-0 win at home to Watford on 13 January and have followed up by beating West Brom 3-0 at St Mary’s and Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford.

Arsenal will be out to avenge the Boxing Day humiliation and have been very reliable to follow at home this season.
