Premier League League football tips – Newcastle vs Southampton prediction

Newcastle manager Steve McClaren has a number of players missing for the meeting with Southampton. Paul Dummett, Emmanuel Riviere, Sylvain Marveaux and Curtis Good are all definitely out through injury. Remy Cabella is doubtful but could make the bench and new signings Chancel Mbemba, Georginio Wijnaldum and Aleksandar Mitrovic are all expected to start.

For Southampton, both Fraser Forster and Florin Gardos are set for long spells on the sidelines, which should mean starts for Maarten Stekelenburg in goal and Steven Caulker in defence. There are doubts over Jordy Clasie, Shane Long, Jay Rodriguez, Ryan Bertrand and Gaston Ramirez but some of them may make the bench.

Possible Line-ups

Newcastle: 4-2-3-1 formation: Krul; Janmaat, Williamson, Mbemba, Anita; Wijnaldum, Colback; Gouffran, Sissoko, Perez; Mitrovic

Southampton: 4-2-3-1 formation: Stekelenburg; Soares, Fonte, Targett, Martina; Clasie, Wanyama; Mane, Tadic, Davis; Pelle

  • Newcastle have won 2, drawn 2 and lost 6 of their last 10 matches
  • Southampton have won 5, drawn 1 and lost 4 of their last 10 matches
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Newcastle have scored an average of 1.2 goals and conceded an average of 1.7 goals per game
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Southampton have scored an average of 2.6 goals and conceded an average of 1.1 goals per game
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 6 of Newcastle’s previous 10 matches
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 5 of Southampton’s previous 10 matches
  • Newcastle have failed to defeat Southampton in their previous 4 attempts

Newcastle will be aiming to banish last season to the back of their memory and the best way to do that, is to get off to a good start here. Newcastle have been busy in the transfer market and will hope the new signings get help get the club off to a good start in 2015/16. However, pre-season has been poor, with a number of defeats to the likes of York, Portland Timbers and Atlas.

Southampton’s season has already started, as they comfortably saw off Dutch side Vitesse in the Europa League qualifiers. Once again, Ronald Koeman has had to make do with losing some key players in the summer transfer window but has also invested some of that money in new talent. Southampton still have a good team, capable of playing attractive football and they should do well again this season.

Steve McClaren has an uphill task as Newcastle manager, although things can’t get much lower than they did at the club last season. However, this is a tricky opening fixture for the Magpies and Southampton have the edge.

We say: Southampton to win and over 2.5 goals at 7/2 with Bet365
