Premier League preview – Newcastle vs Watford prediction

Newcastle are without Emmanuel Riviere, Sylvain Marveaux and Paul Dummett as all three continue to remain absent with injury. Mike Williamson and Steven Taylor remain doubtful but one of them could make the bench. Striker Ayoze Perez is pushing for a start with Aleksandar Mitrovic suspended and Papiss Cisse looking out of sorts.

After being dismissed last weekend, Watford have to make do without Valon Behrami in their midfield. However, considering the great win against Swansea last weekend, manager Quique Flores is unlikely to make any other unforced changes to his team.

Possible Line-ups

Newcastle: 4-2-3-1 formation: Krul; Janmaat, Coloccini, Mbemba, Haidara; Wijnaldum, Colback; Jong, Sissoko, Thauvin; Perez

Watford: 4-2-3-1 formation: Gomes; Nyom, Prodl, Cathcart, Anya; Capoue, Watson; Abdi, Deeney, Jurado; Ighalo

Statistics

  • Newcastle have won 1, drawn 3 and lost 6 of their last 10 matches
  • West Brom have won 3, drawn 3 and lost 4 of their last 10 matches
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Newcastle have scored an average of 1.2 goals and conceded an average of 1.7 goals per game
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Watford have scored an average of 0.7 goals and conceded an average of 0.8 goals per game
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 5 of Newcastle’s previous 10 matches
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 2 of Watford’s previous 10 matches

Prediction

The pressure is already growing on Newcastle manager Steve McClaren. With the club rooted to the bottom of the table having taken just 2 points from a possible 15, the new manager knows that time is going to start running out if Newcastle do not win games. Scoring goals in the Premier League is becoming a real problem and could prove difficult again when playing a solid Watford team.

The visitors have done well in their first 5 matches following promotion from the Championship. Looking very solid defensively, Watford managed to find the goal to compliment their strength at the back in the 1-0 win over a good Swansea team last week. Having lost just 1 of their 5 Premier League games this season, Watford will have little to fear travelling to St James’ Park.

Newcastle have done nothing to suggest they have what it takes to defeat Watford and this game could end in a low scoring draw.
