Premier League preview – Watford vs Manchester City prediction

Nathan Ake sits out the first of a three match ban for being sent off against Tottenham on Saturday. The strike partnership of Odion Ighalo and Troy Deeney has produced 20 of Watford’s 24 league goals this season and the deadly duo look set to keep their 100% attendance record in the Premier League.

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini confirmed Vincent Kompany would be out of action for three to four weeks when speaking after the 0-0 draw at Leicester. Fernando has not been involved since tweaking his hamstring earlier this month and should be ready to return to the matchday squad. Sergio Aguero’s barren run has stretched to five games and Wilfried Bony will be hoping for another chance having scored in three of his last four starts.

Possible Line-ups

Watford: 4-4-2 formation: Gomes; Anya, Cathcart, Britos, Holebas; Abdi, Watson, Capoue, Jurado; Ighalo, Deeney

Manchester City: 4-2-3-1 formation: Hart; Sagna, Otamendi, Mangala, Kolarov; Toure, Fernandinho; de Bruyne, Silva, Sterling; Aguero

Statistics

  • Watford have won 6 drawn 1 and lost 3 of their last 10 matches
  • Manchester City have won 5 drawn 1 and lost 4 of their last 10 matches
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Watford have scored an average of 1.8 goals and conceded an average of 1 goal per game
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Manchester City have scored an average of 1.9 goals and conceded an average of 1.5 goals per game
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 6 of Watford’s previous 10 matches
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 7 of Manchester City’s previous 10 matches

Prediction

Watford are looking to bounce back from a 2-1 defeat against Tottenham at the weekend to be left with one point from their two Christmas fixtures. It was the Hornets’ fourth league defeat at Vicarage Road where they have been more vulnerable than when travelling away.

Manchester City’s 0-0 draw at Leicester ended a run of three successive away defeats. City’s form has been inconsistent with two wins, one draw and two defeats in the last five games but they remain two points from the top of table and have taken four points from two games over Christmas.

A clean sheet against the most prolific strike force in the league will have done City the power of good and a win here could set them up for the second half of the title race.
