Serie A preview – Chievo vs Juventus prediction.

Chievo central defender Bostjan Cesar received two yellow cards within 47 minutes of the 4-1 defeat at Lazio last weekend and is suspended for the visit of Juventus on Sunday. Gennaro Sardo is on standby should Alessandro Gamberini fail to recover from his muscular injury in time. Nicola Rigoni comes into contention having recovered from a muscle strain that forced him out of the trip to Rome. Secondary striker Riccardo Meggiorini and midfielder Perparim Hetemaj remain sidelined.

Juventus have no injury concerns. Alex Sandro is a ready-made replacement for Patrice Evra who serves a one-match suspension with Mario Lemina and Roberto Pereyra close to staking a claim for their inclusion. Max Allegri may choose to leave out Mario Mandzukic whose goals have dried up lately. Alvaro Morata scored a brace against Inter in the Coppa Italia on Wednesday while leading scorer Paulo Dybala came on as substitute for Mandzukic to score the third.

Possible Line-ups

Chievo 4-3-3 formation: Bizzarri; Cacciatore, Dainelli, Sardo, Gobbi; Castro, Radovanic, Pinzi; Birsa, Paloschi, Inglese

Juventus 3-5-2 formation: Neto; Caceres, Bonucci, Chiellini; Cuadrado, Pogba, Marchisio, Asamoah, Sandros; Dybala, Mandzukic

Statistics

  • Chievo have won 4 drawn 2 and lost 4 of their last 10 matches
  • Juventus have won 9 drawn 0 and lost 1 of their last 10 matches
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Chievo have scored an average of 1.3 goals and conceded an average of 1.5 goals per game
  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Juventus have scored an average of 2.4 goals and conceded an average of 0.5 goals per game
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 4 of Chievo’s previous 10 matches
  • There have been over 2.5 goals scored in 7 of Juventus’ previous 10 matches

Prediction

Chievo must go back to 2010 since they last defeated Juventus, their only victory in 25 meetings. They go into this match having won one of the last seven home games in Serie A, the 1-0 defeat of Atalanta on 13 December. Chievo have been beaten at home by Inter, Napoli and Udinese but only by a one-goal margin on each occasion.

Juventus extended their winning streak to nine games in all competitions when blowing away Inter 3-0 in the first leg of the Coppa Italia semi-final in midweek. Allegri’s side have won six successive away games in Serie A and have closed to within two points of leaders Napoli with a 100% record in 11 league games since the end of October.

Juventus are simply irresistible at present and should be followed until this changes.
