Champions League preview – Juventus vs Manchester City prediction

Juventus may stay with the same back four that shut out Milan on Saturday which means Leonardo Bonucci would start on the bench. Midfielder Simone Padoin continues his recovery from a thigh problem while reserve goalkeeper Rubinho and midfielder Robert Pereyra are also out injured

Manuel Pellegrini will be without Vincent Kompany until next weekend at the best and it showed how much the Belgian international is missed at the heart of defence when Liverpool ripped through Manchester City in the 4-1 rout at Etihad Stadium on Saturday. Wilfried Bony and Samir Nasri are both absent with hamstring issues. David Silva has a slight chance to return if passing a fitness test on the ankle knock which has kept him sidelined for the past six weeks.

Possible Line-ups

Juventus: 4-3-1-2 formation: Buffon; Lichtensteiner, Barzagli, Chiellini, Evra; Sturaro, Marchisio, Pogba; Hernanes; Dybala, Mandzucic

Manchester City: 4-2-3-1 formation: Hart; Sagna, Otamendi, Mangala, Kolarov; Delph, Fernando; Toure, Bruyne, Sterling, Aguero

  • Over the course of their previous 10 matches, Manchester City have scored an average of 2.6 goals and conceded an average of 1.1 goals per game

Prediction

Juventus continued their recovery from a poor start in Serie A when registering a fourth successive home league win in defeating Milan 1-0 at the weekend. The Italian champions kicked off the Champions League with a 2-1 victory over Wednesday’s opponents in Manchester before defeating Sevilla 2-0 in Turin. They’ve had to settle for draws in the last two group games and will be keen to seal a place in the last sixteen by claiming all three points here.

Manchester City went to the top of Group D when defeating Sevilla 3-1 in Spain earlier this month. A 0-0 draw at lowly Aston Villa and humiliating 4-1 home defeat at the hands of Liverpool has seen Pellegrini’s men slip to third in the Premier League and anxious for the single point required to progress to the next stage of the Champions League.

Manchester City bounced back from a 4-1 defeat at Tottenham to beat Monchengladbach 2-1 in Germany back in September. They will find it more difficult in Turin where Juventus’ defence continues to grow in strength and a narrow home win looks on the card in this fixture.
